Hi all.  Surgery was completed Thursday and I came home yesterday.  Doing well.  Taking Tylenol for pain with some occasional oxy.  I'm finding it hard to eat.  Small amounts seem to work best.

They attempted the partial, but once they got in there they had to convert to a complete radical.  The tumor was pressing on the collecting system and the renal vein.  He said it would have left me with a hole in kidney and too big a risk of infection or urine leakage.  He felt the risk was too great.  Good news is, the tumor is out and my remaining kidney is working like a champ.

Will follow up in a couple of weeks with the pathology report and see about moving forward.

    so so happy!

That you are home all safe and sound and on the mend.  Pain will lessen as the day go by, just make usre you keep on the meds so you can at least sleep at night. 8-)  And walk walk walk.

Small meals are just fine, as long as you're eating something - I ate Cheerios for the first week, that was all I could handle.

As said, glad you are home!

    Gentle hugs,

    Laurie

I ate very little the first

I ate very little the first week following surgery. In fact, the first few days I could barely manage a couple of bites. I think our digestive system takes a while to recover from the anesthesia. I'm glad you're home and ITA with Laurie above: walk, walk, and walk some more. I walked at least 5 minutes every hour, just around the hosue, then kept increasing it. Also make sure you drink a lot of water.

    Eating after surgery

The doctor forgot to tell me that the pain medications make you constipated. Nobody in their right mind wants to be constipated a week after a neph. Take some Ducolex or similar.

    Symptoms after radical nephrectomy

I experienced the same thing until I started taking a pro-biotic.  They tell me the Oxy kills al the good bacteria in your intestine. Pro-biotics replace the good bacteria that you need for digestion.

    Glad you are home

Good to hear you are home.  I always have issues with eating after surgeries - I believe it is anesthesia related.  Hopefully you will heal quickly and can get out and do some therapeutic walking.

I'm on colace twice a day.

I'm on colace twice a day.  Really not much in my system yet.  I'm down to one oxy at night only and honestly I don't think I really need it.  I'm using it more as a sleep aid.  I will look into pro biotics.

your surgery is over.  Appetite will return in a few days.  Just takes a little while.  Drink plenty of fluids though.  Praying for your recovery.

    hard part

is over. Everything else takes time. Best part is that this didn't ruin your summer. You'll be raking leaves soon. Finish getting better.
