PEG replaced

last night my PEG tube sprang a leak at the end towards the tummy. I managed to clip it off with the clip and phoned the nurse the next day, she looked at it and said she couldn't repair it and called the hospital. I have the PEG that has a washer type thingy inside the stomach and a triangle fastener on the outside. I couldn't have it withdrawn as my throat is completely blocked. The only way that they could do it was cutting it off and pushing it into my stomach then replaced with a balloon fastened PEG. It was all painless and the new PEG is neater than the other with a very short tube, I could extend it if I want but find it's easy to use as it is.. What I was wondering has anyone had the tube cut and the disc push into the stomach and if they had any trouble. I had to sign a treatment form which they wrote the risks on...like the disc may give me a bowel blockage or perforate the bowel etc. I worry a little about that but was relieved they could change the PEG. They said usually they go down the throat retreave the disc and replace with another PEG.

    No

Haven't had a PEG, just a g-tube. Hate to hear that happened to you and hope all goes well from here on out.

    Here's hoping...

Here's hoping everything comes out okay for you.  What you describe is different than what I experienced.  They were able to yank mine out, and at the time, I didn't need another.  Sending positive thoughts.

    My jaw dropped....

What do they figure that little disk will hopefully do?  Just pass through?  I was like Deb...they just pulled mine out, but l didn't need a new one, either.  The doc who pulled mine told me it was like pulling a $.25 piece through a $.10 piece hole....so I'm thinking the disk inside is the size of a quarter.....chances are it will pass through......but I'd get darn nervous when they ask me to sign a form.

I was told when I was with the registrar, The person who books you in, that my team had a quick consultation and decided the only thing to do was to cut the tube off leaving the disk end inside my stomach. He said it should go through the system naturally but there were risks. every time I have surgery I sign a consent form and the waver form that I know the risks, it lets them off the hook if things go wrong.  Not that I could do anything about it, everyone has to sign these forms before procedures. That's why I hesitate to go ahead with the endoscopy to open my throat via my PEG  tube. They told me it's a difficult procedure and they havent done many. One surgeon said there's a hospital unit in the USA that does only that op, they specialise in it, but it costs the earth so that's out of the question. I have a bit of a tummy ache this morning so perhaps it's the disc going through the system.

    Hi Jackie

My last PEG replacement the Doc was thinking he might need to do the same thing. The tube was stuck and would not come out; he pulled like hell and boy it hurt like hell too, but all of a sudden pop it came out. He told me he does not like that type of PEG and don’t know why they used it. Well I told him the other doctor that works with him is the one who put it in. I hope you do OK passing it, you might want to add a little stool softener to your diet.

    Wishing you well
