HAd a PET CT after 12 days of radiation.

Hi All,

My father had a PET CT yesterday after 13 days of completion of radiation. What my onocologist told id ,the primary tumor has almost shrinked (with SUV-3.2 from 10.6)and size almpst gone. But the size of lymph nodes has not shrinked.and one important point is 2 lymph nodes from left side has slightly increased in size and Metastatically as well (from SUV2.2 toSUV 3.1).I am afraid of these terms. Now doctor is saying to have surgery after the 3-4 weeks.

    Surgery

Many people have surgery after radiation to 'clean up.'  12 days is quite early for a PET but sounds good.

    sounds very unusual

To have a PET less than two weeks after completing is something I have never read here. Either they are looking for something very specific a PET this soon is likely to show false positives meaning the results are unreliable to determine if the metastasis is gone. Please ask for further clarification of why the test was done and what they are trying to assess. Since the doctor is recommending surgery now, something in the CT influenced that decision. Good luck, Don

    Agree

From everything I have heard, a PET scan that early is highly unusual.

    Surgery

Many of us have had surgery. I think mets to lymph nodes is more common for most of us here than not. My surgery was done before my radiation/chemo. The surgery was much easier on me than the radiation was. The important thing is that they are watching closely and going in to get it.

    I dont know,Now i am in

I dont know,Now i am in totally confused state. They will decide about the type of surgery after the ENT check up,The surgery might be only lymph node removal in case the primary tumor has gone.Elese it will be a complex surgery Bilatteral neck dissection.
