Life Saved by Ineffective Primary Care Physician

After seeing my primary care physician several times over a 6 to 8 month period for a runnig related injury I convinced him to do some tests.  He was content to just keep telling me to take time off from running.  I thought I needed an MRI of my pelvic area to see what was going on but he suggested getting a CT Scan. Good thing I got a CT because that identified my cancer and fortunately it was very early in its development. Had my tumor removed in May.  I went to the UCSF sports clinic today and found out what my running injury was and the doc didn't need any scans or X-rays to identify the problem. So, if I would have gone to a competent doctor first I wouldn't have found the cancer.  It's amazing how things work out for the best.

    Training

    Did a track workout last night. I did 1200s while the group did 1600s. With the warm up and cool down it was 5 miles.  That wore me out. Tonight is a 20 mile bike ride. It'll be interesting to see how that goes because it will be my first post surgery bike ride. I'll take it easy during the 3 sprint sections so it shouldn't be that bad.  

    It's good to get back to the track but I can tell it's going to be a long time before my speed is back to normal.

    It's good to hear you are doing so well after all you  have been through.  A couple of years ago I use to blindly trust doctors.  Now I know it is in my best interest to research everything regarding my health and my loved ones health.  No doctor cares as much as I do about me and my loved ones :)

    Still doing better than me 8-)

    I am still only a 5K and about 10 miles bike.  Will do my swim and a tad of weights tomrrow.  But so glad you are out and able to do it.  Does your back get sore right behind where the bad kidney was/is?  Mine does when I get really tired.  Luckily just a heating pad works.

    Your speed will come. I bet by mid-July you'll be there or at least very close

    My back doesn't hurt

    My back doesn't hurt during/after exercise. But it used to hurt on the side of my bad kidney when I drove a car over 30 minutes. Now that seems to be gone post surgery. Hope yours improves with time. 

    I did a 25 mile bike ride yesterday.  I did okay for the first 10 miles and then it got pretty tough. Finished near the back of 40 to 50 riders. Everything feels good except the cardio. I'm wondering if the surgery affects cardio more than just the degradation in fitness level from taking time off. It could also be the 10 lbs I put on in my recovery phase.  At this point I'm guessing that it will be September before I'm able to build back up to a reasonable level. That's okay just longer than I had thought.

    Even on a good day, after 25 miles I'd be pooped too! Also, I bet your weren't just tooodling along either. 

    Doing a 3.5 car drive tomorrow - that should be fun (not).  I don't sit still well to begin with - now add this!

    You had surgery in May?  So Sept. sounds about right for back upto snuff.  I am just going on how I am doing - since I had mine in March.  But still bet you're going to amaze yourself and be doing close to normal mid-July.  But as you said, longer is okay.  I am just aiming to start and finish this year and do the couple races that REALLY matter to me.

    Next year - we'll blow them away!
