Swelling, Infection and Body Itching

Welcome to CSN, I sometimes get a lot of itching from different types of antibiotic when I have an infection or when I have too much yeast or fungus  growing in my body. You said he has hi sugar levels in his blood that could also cause a lot of problems, does he have diabetes. His doctors need to check him and get the sugar levels down to normal, if he eats a lot of sweets you need to get him to cut down. I hope some of this helps, I too am 58 so he is still a young man with a lot of life ahead of him. Will keep you both in my prayers. I have Type II diabetes that is under control, however when I have surgery, my sugars go crazy high and I need to be on insulin in the hospital.  If his sugars are high, what is the hospital doing about it.  Please do no let them ignore high blood sugar.  Is he itchy because of dry skin?  Or like Hondo said, antibiotics might be a side effect.  When he gets off of the antiobiotics you need to look into diet and probiotics to build him up.  Will he be having chemo and/or radiation?  Stick around, we will help you get through this.

You can check for Fungus in the Nails that is one of the best was, also Skin Problems.  Another way is very early in the morning take a clear glass of water and spit into it within 30 minutes of waking up. Make sure you build up a bunch of saliva, but just saliva from your mouth – don’t cough up anything. Do this before you rinse, spit or put anything into your mouth. Then wait for 15 minutes.

Your saliva will float on the surface of the water, which is normal. However, if you see cloudy saliva that sinks to the bottom of the glass like sediment, you may be seeing colonies of yeast. You may also see the saliva on the top with tiny strings that start to hang down that may look like jellyfish, hair, or spider legs, or suspended specks of yeast floating in the middle of the glass.

Jock itch is a fungal infection of the groin and upper thighs. You might think only men and boys get it, but girls and women can get it, too.

Candida is a yeast, similar to a fungus. It most often affects the skin around the nails or the soft, moist areas around body openings. Diaper rash in babies can be from one type of candidal infection, as can thrush (white patches often found in the mouths of babies.) Older girls and women may develop another form of candidal infection in and around the vagina. This is called a yeast infection.

I had SCC of mandible 01/2012. Caring for the wound where the fibula was removed has to be meticulous. My sister tended mine and was extremely careful and I still got a staff infection in it. That was resolved with antibiotics. I use Aquaphor for itching around the site. It's greasy but gives great relief. Even 2 years later I get some intense itching but, fortunately, not too often anymore.  Where did your Dad have his surgery done?

Have the doctors given your dad something for the itching?  Benadryl?  I know it makes you sleepy but I know that the itching drives you crazy.  Soak in a bathtub with baking soda in it.  Use very mild soap, about a handfull.  I believe it is Aveeno that has an oatmeal mixture that you add to the bath for relief (we used this when our kids had chicken pox).  There are creams for itchy skin.  Is the wound healing on his leg?  You might need to see another doctor about wound care.  Start using probiotics to help build up the good stuff you need in your gut.  Keep an eye for white patches in his mouth (thrush), there are medicines for that.  I had thrush through the first treatment and again when I had neck dissection for mets.

I wasn't able to take a bath or shower until my leg wound was 100% healed and that took quite awhile. Don't put anything directly or indirectly on that leg wound, if it isn't healed, without talking to the surgeon first.
