Mucus making me throw up

How do I stop that from happening?? I certainly HURTS to throw up stomach contents when your throat is in week 8 lol. Sucks, just threw up all in my freaking bathroom again. Had lots of mucus so I'm guessing that's the culprit. How do you stop it? Everything I get down my gullet for nurishment causes the inside of my throat to produce mucus. So what do I do? I don't have a PEG, so I have no choice but to keep putting supplements down my throat.

God bless,

Jamie

    That thick mucus is awful.

Not sure how to help throwing up - that happened to my husband too. He drank Coke to clear his throat.

The good news is he is 30 days out and the thick mucus is gone. Amazing difference. Hope it is sooner for you.

    I feel for you!

I was the exact same way.  I carried a bag around with me and spit.  ALL.DAY.LONG.  It was awful, but if I swallowed the stuff, I'd vomit right away.  And it sure does HURT.  I had a PEG, but would still try to get water down my throat.  I would spit and rinse like crazy until it felt sort of cleared out and then eat or drink really fast.  I am so sorry you're dealing with this!  I noticed I was spitting less and less and honestly one day it just was almost gone.  Hang in there!!

    Suction Machine

    Jamie,

You need to get a suction machine from a medical supply place. It helps tremendously on getting the mucus out. It's like a little vaccum that you use when needed. You can't spit enough for as good as this machine is!!! You won't regret it...

Good luck....it will get better...but hard to break that stuff down. We recommend the machine...

Is that caused from the radiation, surgery or chemo? I know many others have had the same issue but that was one bullet I dodged. Hoping it passes quickly for you.

    Thanks all

On my follow up with my onc, he gave me a certain type of steriod that is supposed to reduce the inflammation and the mucus. He also gave me a steriod during my fluid IV today, and it made a big difference. I could tell that the mucus I was making after drinking 8oz of SPIZ was much less than yesterday. I hate to buy a suction machine to use for another week to two weeks (that how long the doc thinks I will have to deal with the problem in a major way - he said the inside of the throat usually matches the outside of the throat and the outside of my throat is nearly healed). God is good! I will see how the steriods perform and then will buy the machine if needed :)

BTW, if you guys (still in treatment) don't have any SPIZ, I recommend that you try it. It mixes with water instead of milk and it gives a lot of nutrients. I found that it didn't inflame my mucus nearly as much as Ensure, Boost, Carnation, etc - it also didn't hurt nearly as bad going down. As a plus, it is already loaded with L-Glutamine. Google search SPIZ and go to their website.

    God bless,

    Jamie

P.S. Next Tuesday I will be finished with week 8! God is good!

    Steriods

The steriods seem to be doing the trick... which feels really nice. I don't like the way they make the rest of me feel, but, hey, it's an easy trade off in this case!

My onc is an awesome Dr and will do everything in his power to take care of the side effects. He's usually right :)

Steve, yep, I finished on Christmas Eve. Has anyone heard from PJ? I know she was supposed to be finishing up about now. I hope she is doing well. Press on Steve! Time moves slow for you, but then you will turn around and say, "By God, I finished!"

    God bless,

    Jamie

    me too

That happened to me too. I would cough my head off then throw up a bunch of mucus. Happended quite often and left me shaking. I have a trache too and contantly there was mucus, all day and night.  Which seemed like forever, finally the mucus is practically gone (4 months after treatment ended) and mostly I think it's the nature of the trache mostly causing it now.  Doc says there is still a lot of watery stuff around the swelling  of my larynx though.
