in Head and Neck Cancer #1

I promised myself I wouldn't, get overly concerned by symptoms that appear in the early stages of recovery...but.. I have lumps on the roof of my mouth. I can run my tongue over them and they feel smooth lumpy, different sizes. I looked in my mouth and can see them with a torch. it.s the same colour as the roof of my mouth so it's not thrush. I also have lost my voice have a painful swallow like somethings in my throat. I,m worrying that I have more cancer. I read that you mustn't think that way but I can,t help it. I,m in my second week after rads

    It sounds to me

    like pretty normal stuff in the second week following rads....and I've sure heard of many people who's two weeks following treatment as being worse than any other part of the whole deal.  You will want to show your mouth to your Dr. at your next appointment.....but honest, it would be quite unusual for cancer to return so soon after treatment.  It's going to take a number of weeks for your body to start feeling like it's healing....I think you just fine and probably right where you should be.  The swallowing thing is pretty common.....that lump in the throat pain.

    I know exactly what you are referring to

    I noticed these just as you describe them, after my first rads.  I ask the ENT oncologist what the hell they were.  His remarks were:  "I have no  idea, but they are not cancer."  They really never did go completely away, and I cannot tell you for certain they were not there before rads.  Maybe I just hadn't noticed them.

    Phew

    I,m so glad to hear someone else had the same bumps. my ear keeps bleeding from rad burns on the pillow at night. my granddaughter says its sore behind my ear I can't feel it as that side is still numb fron dissection operation. I,ve read along with everyone on the site and told myself not to worry, I,m not a worrier usually but there again I don't know what to expect. I,m told your never quite the same after H&N. How long before some of the affects wear off. I seem to have new probs every day. I would love to eat but I,m scared to swallow more than a sip of water.

    all about normal

    JF,

    I vote for all symptoms as normal, including post cancer worry about cancer.  You will slowly get better, but be patient and enjoy baby steps of improvement. 

    “Never quite the same after H&N”, I agree, it is hopefully a once in a life time event.

    Keep sipping water, eating will come soon enough.  While we (H&N) share the (not) eating disorder you get a 100 ideas on what to do about it.  I tried about 83 of them with varying degrees of success.  You just need to figure out what works for you, no matter what anybody says.  For me, swallowing wasn’t the problem, it was taste, no taste, awful feel, but it resolved itself (7 months).

    NEWS FLASH:  (never quite the same) Jackflash starts eating again, she said something about it being “idea 123”.

    If you are sipping water

    maybe start working up to swallowing real food by sipping milk...it's just a tiny bit thicker.  Is it fear of pain, or fear of swallowing and not being able to get it down?  If you get that down, maybe some mush made very thin and gruel like?  Don't eat it hot, let it cool off to just warm. 

    One thing for sure....if you're sipping water to keep your swallow muscles working, there is nothing wrong with using your tube at this stage of the game.....not even being two weeks out of treatment.   It's going to come together, it's just a matter of when....you'll see.  Patience is the key at the end of treatment.

    While it doesn't sound at all concerning, always best to ask your doctor on next visit for confirmation. If eating is an issue, start slow but definitely start. Like Phrannie said, milk was easy for many of us. Eggs too. Maybe try cool whip. Many things won't work work at first but keep trying. What didn't work yesterday may work today. I recall crab legs and melted butter worked well for me. The butter was very soothing on my otherwise sore lips and the calories were huge.

    I was panic also

    I concur with Matt that what you are going through is normal. I remember mine being radiated on the left jaw and I was panic when I felt one or two lumps appear on my right side of my neck.  I also felt losing my voice and having ulcers after post 1-2 wks. All these are the post effect of treatment.  Things will definitely gets better.  Nelson.

    I also noticed some tiny bumps after radiation, but it might be that they were there before, but didn’t notice them. Mine are either symmetrical or right on the center (one is a bit larger) and didn't seem to change in size over time, so I wasn’t overly concerned about that. But now that others noticed them too, it makes me feel better.
