I have finished 8 radiations and skin is okay so far. I do know that sun is not good for skin right now as it is going thru radtiation. Was wondering if okay to go out wiht lot fo sun screen put on every 2 hours?

Also any suggestions for one of those really large hats?

Thanks,
Sam

    Sunday Afternoon
I love my Sunday Afternoon hats. They are a bit expensive (but I am worth it!) and do have sales if you keep an eye on the site. They have SPF material and have held up very well. I have a wool hat for the winter and cloth for the summer, I like the neck strap for windy days. I use them every day for recess (I'm a teacher) and all outdoor activities.

Sun screen--I could not use it during treatment, I was too burned and just walking to the car was sometimes painful. Once healed, I use it when I am outside (along with hats). I am not going to push the button, I think that it was sun damage that caused my cancer. I use a high #, people have preferences to greasy feel. I will try a new one this summer but I have been using Vanicream SPF 35 (it is greasy to feel) and Bare Escentuals has a powder sun screen. I also have allergies that I have to deal with so I am always careful when changing products.

You might want to stay out of the sun during treatment. You can also get Slogger hats at places like OSH.

Sports Authority also had nice SPF fabric shirts (my favorite for recess and outside activities), I can't remember if they had a lot of hats. REI is another place for hats.

I bought a hat that actually had a
a SPF rating of 30. I found it at the local Sports store. It's made of palm leaves, and manufactured in Mexico....BIG brim, unisex, so can be worn by anybody.

Around here the weather has been horrible, so no need to wear it yet. If you're in a sunny place tho, I'd protect my neck and face at all costs. It's only been in the last two weeks, that I've developed a real radiation tan on both my face and neck...lots of itching, which to me means damaged skin. You don't want to inadvertently add more damage via real sunlight.

    Hi everyone, I finished rads
Hi everyone, I finished rads last May (2011) so bought a few REALLY BIG sun hats. Also used to put on the sunblock very heavily. Ended up not being outside that much last summer, but whenever I was I had the hat on. This year I will be very careful not to get sunburned even though my skin has healed from the rads, I can't imagine re-burning that skin again.

    Hey Sam, check out
Hey Sam, check out Dorfman-Pacific hats too, hey have a great sun protection hat; I've been wearing one for years. Also if you are going to be spending any long time in the sun, especially recreationally, I suggest a sunblock with titanium, as it is the very best protecton you can get. I live in South Florida, and spend a lot of time out hiking, running, backpacking, and until last year, surfing, so I have done a little checking into what works best. Bullfrog makes a sunscreen with titanium, but it all depends the amount of time and activity. I try not to leave the house without sunblock on my face, neck and arms; Neutragena is one of my current favorite everyday sun protection brands. I also suggest checking with your doc to get his/her opinion of sun exposure at this time in treatment. Wishing you sunshine days.
