in Head and Neck Cancer #1
I've had 14 Rad treatments as of today. My teeth are very sore. It reminds me of when I had braces and got them tightened. Is this normal? I visited my dentist before treatments started and my teeth are in great shape and I've been flossing/ brushing and then brushing with a cloudier toothpaste every night...

    More Than Likely...
    Nothing serious going on, everyone reacts differently to the chemo and rads..., you can always mention it to your MD's.

    I would recommend some type of flouride treatmeant and regime' though if you aren't using it. Either gel, trays or something similar.

    I use the Oral-B STOP, but there are several that use trays and other preventive measures.

    Auto-correct got me!
    I use a flouride toothpaste at night, not a cloudier one:) rad side effects keep getting better and better!

    Megan,

    If you haven't done so, switch to the softest toothbrush that you can find. My gums became very tender during radiation and the Dentist told me that I was brushing too hard and causing the discomfort. He had me switch to the softer brush and it helped. He even suggested a child's soft brush.

    Soft brush
    I used a tiny soft child's toothbrush. It was shaped like a whale. By the end of treatment, my mouth was so very sore that I could only bring myself to brush once a day. I did use a fluoride dental floss and I was able to gently use that a few times a day, and I believe that helped.
