When I was 1st dx with H&NC and learning what the future would hold for taste buds and eating that I was going to have a Food Bucket List as long as I could until treatment started. I know some on this website have not started treatment so eating is likely / others who are in treatment so looking forward to their favorite food again / and those regaining or have regained there ability to eat. So just wondering what your favorite food is/was/or will be again. For me #1 Big Cheesburger & fries #2 Pizza, All meat,#3 KFC enough said. The wife is a great cook love her Chicken Pasta. Likley will start treatment next week or two so may have to just watch the Food Channel with a tear in my eye for the near future. So whats your Favorite Food?

great idea for a new thread
hi there...for me the thing I (still) miss most is a Lou Malnati's pizza. It is a Chicago-style deep dish and my all time favorite food. Cheeseburgers are a close second... but today I actually ate a small plain McD's cheeseburger !! So, your taste DOES eventually come back in bits and pieces... it took me almost one year since my last radiation treatment so don't give up hope.

Good idea for a thread topic. Considering I've just gotten back about 90% of my taste buds, today's lunch was the best meal I think I've ever eaten.

A few of us went to the best #1 rated Mexican restaurant in Las Vegas for lunch and I swear the flavors were out of this world. For the last two months everything has tasted lousy due to my RT's. Lucky for me my taste buds returned and made the meal quite enjoyable. This was the first time out since rads and I was really worried I'd make a scene due to coughing or just not being able to eat it. Tried a chip w/salsa and it hurt like the devil. My tongue is still really sore and my throat has active hurting sores on it. Yes I'm still using the Magic Mouthwash.

But it was a success and I raved about it all day. And actually finished my plate! My meals for the last couple of months have been small and somewhat bland. Spices hurt too much so I was afraid the tacos would burn, but they didn't. When I can put pepper on food again may be awhile. At least today I got the required amount of calories, yea!

So thanks for posting this, I've been really grateful all day.

    Good for you Tommy!!
I was starting to drool when you were describing your Mexican meal. Hubby is right now, on his way to picking our "eat out at home, Mexican dinnners"....love that we can get it to go...can hardly wait for him to get home!

    Ten Gallon Food Bucket List
I did try to get in all faves as taste was starting to go. I remember being very sad at the realization that I couldn't taste spaghetti sauce (but at the same time, I COULD taste steamed chicken - huh?). Another temporary loss that really stung was strawberries - they smelled soooo good.

My first daydream was catsup. I was very happy to be able to eat it again, but it took a while. Oddly enough, it burns again now (like salad dressing), but not enough to deter me. My big goal was steak with horseradish. I made that, too. Yep, steak, kiddies. I don't order it at restaurants, but sometimes get it at buffet. Even two years out, there are times when certain foods just aren't worth the time an effort.

Each new food I reclaimed was a celebration. Well, maybe not EACH - but many. I called my friend when I ate a donut. Not that I was a donut fanatic, but it was a slow food to get back for me.

A big goal was Chipotle burrito bol with chicken and corn salsa. The first time I tried to eat it after treatment,it made water come out of my eyes, and I could see my son's heart melt, as he jumped up to place an order for some plain rice and beans I could mash. Now, I find that I usually prefer to just get the vegetarian version - gauc helps.

I did try to recall the foods that I could taste the longest - these were the foods I tried to eat first as taste was coming back. For the record - some kind of ready made cinnamon roll pudding was one of the foods I could swallow and taste the longest.
OK - sorry I started thinking about this - now I have cravings.

For those in treatment - know that most of us get back at least most of the foods we love. Do well.

I see your point, zipperneck. A few days ago, a lady at work said "Oh, I LOVE Cream of Wheat - do you like that, Pam?" Hmmmmm - I looked at her, and said "I NEVER eat it". Still like eggs, though - Cheesy eggs at Waffle House was my first successful food out post-treatment. I even had a few bites of raisin toast (not so successful at the time).

    Cream of Wheat
Pam, so you got burned out on the Cream of Wheat? Funny, I had forgotten how much I liked that stuff as a kid. Bought a box during the worst of it and have been eating it ever since. My wife asks for it several times a week. Next I want to try Malt O Meal.

What I want is SPICY Mexican food. My tongue is still so sore even mint toothpaste hurts. One day it will heal (and my throat too) and I'll feast on nice and hot salsa with lots of spicy dishes followed by a bite of a Jalapeno pepper every time. I wonder how long it will take?

One great benefit of this topic is it is stimulating my one and only salivary gland!

In the discussion a few years ago, I told the group that I kept a Bon Appetit Magazine hidden under my pillow during treatment.
