not looking promising

Hi everyone I got my warning call the other day and then 2 days later prep call telling me it was time to come back to Denver. I got here 6 a.m. yesterday morning drove all night to get here, spent all day in meetings between the kidney team, liver team his surgical team and the palliative care dr. His kidneys and liver are shutting down, he has so much fluid build up we are trying a last ditched effort of dialysis, but they aren't hold hope that it will work and even if it does we have to figure out why the liver wasn't working and caused this downhill slope. He has been running a temp since last nights dialysis and just over all yucky feeling. I had a hard time deciding whether or not to do this step but then decided if we do it and it doesn't work it was time, but if it works he still might get to watch our kids grow up. Today his heart has been doing funky things but everytime they try to do ekg it stops go figure. They chose today to go the route of just trying to get fluid out of his body w/o the dialysis process we did last night only to discover his line is clotted up so now trying to figure out if they need to pull it and put in a new one :(

Will update as I have more. the kids aren't here they don't want to be said they want to respect dads wishes and they want to remember what he was like before this not his "final" days. I have one friend telling me I should force them to be here...that late they will thank me, but we have never forced our kids to do something they were set on not doing.

    Hi Renee
Im sorry to hear of Carl's situation. I have a friend who is dealing with stage IV CC too and he's been having issues with liver and kidneys that they traced back to his spleen. It's enlarged and causing other problems (liver for one). He is having a procedure done this Wednesday to starve and therefore kill part of his spleen.
I have absolutely no idea if this info can benefit Carl but it might be worth mentioning to his doctor. Like I said, it may not be related or part of anything but you may want to ask about it...

    I will ask
who knows at this point and anything is worth asking. Though I think I recall something about having looked at his spleen before they started feeding tube and we have now last night moved on to iv nutrition.

    Oh Renee
I shall do some heavy duty praying and hoping that things turn around. As for your children, you are right about it being their and your choice what each of you do, I do hope that you have someone with you?
You are both in my thoughts,

I am so sorry that none of the doctor's have found any answers to Carl's continuing problems. I will be thinking of you, Carl, and your children.

    It Can't hurt to ask
I'm sorry Renee that Carl's having problems. Sometimes it seems like it's one thing after another. I certainly am not trying to get your hopes up but they overlooked this on my friend then they investigated it and it did turn out to be something. Who knows if this procedure on Wednesday will even do anything but right now there's a chance.

As far as your kids go, while your friend may mean well it's something that you as a family have to decide upon. EVERYONE will tell you what you SHOULD do. I know that with my Mom, she once fell down the basement stairs and broke her wrist. She managed to get back upstairs using a mop as a crutch then called my sister before calling 911 because the house wasn't clean (enough) and she also didn't want to bother anyone... You know your situation better and everyone involved. IF things go south (and I hope they don't) I know that I wouldn't want to have any regrets about not doing this or saying that.

    chest pains
He woke around 2 a.m. with complaints of heavy pains breathing like something is sitting on his chest yet his vitals are all same. chest xray has been ordered so waiting on that. We have put him in sitting position but still nothing he is uncomfortable. I wish I could understand why things have only gotten worse and not better. They have been doing everything from what I can see and nothing seems to help. He has desire to live which is why I chose no matter the life after he would be around to see the kids grow even if he wasn't able to do some of the things prior in life. They are just added bonus' in life.

    Dear Renee
I am so sorry to hear that things are not better for Carl.

I am sure that you have seen that everything possible that can be done is being done.

As for the children, I think you are doing the right thing. Each of us, regardless of age should have the choice if possible.

Please take care of yourself. I know you are being vigilant with Carl, but you have to maintain your own health.

    Prayers for you all,

    Marie who loves kitties

Renee so sorry this hasn't gotten better for the two of you. I don't understand why they did not try dialysis earlier on.

    Thinking of you and Carl
    Renee,

I am so sorry that you and Carl are facing this mountain head on. My heart goes out to both of you and your children.

I was (19) when my dad had his final days...I thought it was really difficult in seeing my father looking so fragile and unresponsive but in looking back, I was glad my family forced me to say "Goodbye"...but then again I was "19" and able to handle more than young children. I assure you the decision you make for your children will be the right one and you must accept that~

Prayers to you from Minnesota. May God's healing hand be on Carl today.

    Renee,
I am so sorry for this downturn in Carl's condition. I am still praying for you. It sounds like you are respecting Carl's and your children's wishes for how they want to handle the situation if Carl is unable to recover.

Continuing to send light and prayers your way.

    So sorry...
Renee, I am so sorry for what is happening with Carl. You've been in my thoughts and prayers throughout this ordeal. Stick to your guns and do what your instincts tell you is the right thing to do. I don't agree with your friend. I hope you have somebody there with you through this.
