Question: If you or your loved one had a liver resection, how many days was your hospital stay? dec 16 is the tentative day for my husband's resection surgery. doctors say 5-7 days hospital stay they are usually off because Tony always has complications. to top it off, my youngest daughter's birthday is the 16th and my older daughter's birthday is Christmas! plus the surgery is out of town. oh, and our 19th wedding anniversary is the 19th.

    6 days for me
I was in the hospital for 6 days when I had my liver resection (wasn't so lucky when I had pneumonia- that was 13 days). Hope things go well for your husband- take care!

    8 or 9 Days...
....and it wasn't even for a resection...they ended up doing RFA, but they opened me up with a full open incision.

    Surgery 16th?

    The Game Plan:

    1. 12-16-11 Small celebration for your youngest daughter in ICU with Tony 16th.
    2. 12-19-11 Celebrate wedding anniversary with Tony in his hospital room.
    3. 12-25-11 Christmas + B'day for oldest daughter in the quiet comfort of home.

Tony will be going through quite a bit, so just having his family around will be "celebration" for all of you. 5-7 is typical, so you've got a good idea on what to expect. If it goes longer, just be glad he is at a facility that can tend to his needs; that's what will be really important.

I've spent birthdays, christmas, and new year's in hospital rooms - not the way you would draw it up on the map - but the key will be how you choose to look at it. It's not perfect, but will me memorable in a different way for you this year.

He'll just be glad to have made it through and to spend some nice moments with you.

    Good luck, Alex and Tony:)

Sounds like December is going to be very busy for you
Hi Alex, we are going on 8 days here, hope to leave tomorrow but not sure. We have had minor issues. It is a hard time to have surgery but you can have small celebrations and a quiet Christmas. Our oldest is graduating from college next week and I usually go crazy at Christmas but this year will be different. How far do you have To travel for surgery? You will be happy to have the surgery done and celebrate a new year without cancer. Wishing you the best. Hugs, Teri

    Very good game plan!
5 or 6 days will be great. The doctor showed him the size the incision will be and it will be huge. I do want to be home for Christmas, but thank you, Craig, for advice and motivation to think of the celebration a little differently this year! Tony was in the hospital exactly two years ago for 17 days and just last month for 8 days ). So I really have to getmentally prepared for another hospital stay. My nerves are crazy and Tony has been sleeping the past two days away. Avoidance, depression? My teenage daughter has been really having a hard go with this. Major meltdown in the car. Why do meltdowns always happen in cars? I am the enemy etc.... am so worried about her! Thanks for listening! Alex

I really hope you get to go home tomorrow, Teri! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. How exciting for the college graduation! My oldest turned 18 last night! So, I am used to crazy Decembers! We're 4-5 hours away from home for surgery. Have a good night!

    My husband slept the entire
My husband slept the entire day before surgery. I think it is just a coping mechanism like you mentioned. Daughters and mothers are the most complex of all the family relationships. It is a relationship of extremes, they love you, they hate you, they need you, they want you to leave them alone, they admire you, you iritate them. I would get angrier at my own if I hadn't done the same to my mom. I will pray for an uneventful surgery and recovery for you and your husband. Mine was bossy, rude, and demanding for eight days. Yesterday his normal pleasant loving appreciative personality returned. He owes me big. Lisa

    glad to be home
We did finally get to come home and am so happy to be here. It is impossible to get any rest in a hospital as I'm sure you know. Today was day 13 since surgery and Kevin is moving around much better now and more like himself. He is still in some pain and very tired but definately on the road to recovery. His incision is huge but healing. We go back to doctor in a week to have staples removed I hope. I hope that things are going well for you. I know you must be stressed out right now. I will be thinking about you and your family and praying for an uneventful and successful surgery and a short stay in the hospital! Take care, Teri

    Good to hear from you...
Hi Alex, I've been thinking about you and Toni and know you are so ready for this surgery to be done. Kevin is doing really good right now, it has been 2 weeks and 3 days since his surgery. He is getting around much much better and able to walk around the block which I think is great. We go for his post op appt. on Tuesday so anxious to find out what is next, not sure if it will be chemo or radiation. I'm thinking about you and your family and hope that you have someone to come to your house to help with the kids while you are at the hospital with Toni. I will be praying for a successful surgery and hoping your stay in the hospital is short. God Bless you all. Hugs, Teri

I just had my third liver
I just had my third liver resection. The first 2 were wedge sections which resulted in 4days and 3 day hospital stay. The third one they took my entire right lobe and a piece of my diaphram which resulted in 7 days in the hospital.

    Good luck with your surgery.

    Good morning! Wishing you
Good morning! Wishing you all a holiday season full of hope and love! Just an update on my husband,Tony. Liver resection surgery on the 20th went very well. They were able to remove 4 tumors. The doctors and staff at UCLA are amazing. (ocean view from hospital room too!) The doctor actually came in and said, "you're cancer free!". What a gift those words were! Recovery is a slow process but he's doing well! For me, it's one foot in front of the other right now... Sleeping at the hospital, keeping our kids needs met, Christmas, and our daughter's 16th bday on Christmas Day! Breath in, breath out! I can do this with a smile on my face, right?!

Hi Alex, I am so happy to hear your news!!!!! Ocean view from the hospital sounds nice for you! Cancer free sounds even nicer! Recovery starts out slow but all of a sudden it will go fast. My husband is like a new person now 3 weeks and 3 days now after his surgery. It sound like you have your hands full right now with everything going on. Take one day at a time and lots of deep breaths! It will get better. Thanks for the update. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and pray for Toni's recovery. I also hope that your daughter has a very happy 16th birthday! My daughter turns 15 in January....teenage girls can be as challenging as cancer some days!! Hugs and prayers and keep on smiling!
