    Bad path report
After my surgery in April, I went back a week later for the path report & found out that the chemo had not killed the cancer & had possibly spread to my liver. I freaked out. However, after 33 rounds of rads the spot in my liver was gone. I go back next month on the 23rd & I'm hoping for good results. I'm sorry that your friends have had to suffer through more surgeries. Are they doing ok now?

had a 2nd surgery to get
clean margins last year after my "lumpectomy" (the bill said partial mastectomy...I think that they can charge more for that). My 2nd "lumpectomy" was 2 weeks after the first. I have found several people on this board who had the same experience.

Hi Denise -- I had a lumpectomy and re-excision 2 weeks later to get clear margins. The cells left were in-situ cells, but it still worried me. I was hoping he got it all the first round.

Same here.I had a second surgery within 3 weeks after my lumpectomy to make sure margins were clear and check if any cancer may still be present. I had DCIS. It was contained in the milk duct/nipple area. I heard this is a precaution.

I know my friends said "Why didn't the doctor get it all the first time"????.He did but wanted to check margins. Can't turn that down.

Three was the charm for me
I had a mammogram and ultrasound on a lump that had been biopsied two years previously. The surgeon didn't think it was cancer but decided to take it out anyway because it was "bothering" me. That was surgery 1. It turned out to be a 3.5 cm invasive ductal carcinoma tumor. She did a lumpectomy for surgery 2 - did not get clean margins. I switched to a major hospital's cancer center, got a mastectomy with clean margins finally!

I'm sorry your friends had to go through more than one also!

    I was initally diagnosed
I was initally diagnosed with DCIS (non-invasive), but when they did the lumpectomy they found some invasive cancer so they had to go back in a week later to get the rest and get clean margins.

    3 surgeries
First lumpectomy was done 9/28/2010, because margins were not clear, re-excision was done 10/29/2010. Still unclear margins, therefore I had a mastectomy 12/16/2010. Fortunately it came to that, because the pathology report from the tissue of the mastectomy found more cancer in another quadrant that did not show up on any of the tests...mammo, sono and MRI.

Will your friend now have a mastectomy?

What has happened to your friend Denise sounds unbelievable. I am so sorry that she has to go thru this or that any pink sister has to go thru surgery again to get clear margins.

I hope this is the last time she has to go thru this.
