Dentist visit today: Just give me some dynamite and I can do it my self.

Well I guess it is not that bad but beginning to really feel how life with being treated twice for C sucks no matter what you try to do. Today was my first visit to the Cancer dentist in Houston for reconstructing of my teeth, and yep the problem again is his tools don’t fit in my little small mouth. They need at the minimum 25mm or more but all I have is 20mm and for the teeth way in the back it is even less.

Also they don’t want to pull any of the teeth for fear of breaking the Jaw bone because of osteoporoses. He wants to do a root canal on two maybe three of the teeth but is afraid that the nerve on one is running too close to the tooth, wam bam thank you mam if he hits it. Oh and did I say how much it will cost, he don’t even have a figure yet because of all the other stuff I might need.

I think I will just let them rot out of my mouth, at lease I will look like someone who chews Tobacco then and not someone who had cancer.

Well for now my Reconstruction Dentist needs to talk to the Surgeon Dentist Doctor at MD Anderson who I been seeing for the passed two years on what is the next step.

Well life is still good even with all the bad things and I am not going to die worrying about my teeth.

Well oh is all I can say, Think I will write a sermon or something tonight

is nothing to fool with. Best of luck on the dentistry. LOL, looks like I finally found someone with a mouth smaller than mine. I can't get 30mm open, but I'm above 25. That doesn't permit cheeseburgers, but with practice, I find I can now usually miss rubbing stuff all over my lips when I eat. I've not yet had a lot of dental problems. Guess if I live long enough I will:)

    Hello Hondo and Longterm,

Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious, it's still osteoradionecrosis. Geez what a name. I wish I could take a few of my millimeters and give them to you Hondo, my mouth opens way more than is necessary, and too often. And all this to be able to get a root canal, or three. Hang in my friend.

    best, Hal

    Hi John

Please don’t take this wrong but I am glad to find someone with the same problem that I can talk too about it. I am hoping to hear back from the Dentist today on a treatment plan whether HBO or just total reconstruction. Did you have any root canals as I am afraid of these incase of infection. Also do you use a jaw device to keep your mouth at 23mm as mine goes back to right about 12mm then I have to stretch it back everyday to 20mm. I would love if you could give me a little run down on what they did to you and how much it cost. May be on PM or something.

Thanks my friend I could really use some help on this

Thanks for the offer but like you said this is just something I will have to do myself or better my Lord and I together.

    Hi longterm

Cheeseburgers do they still make them, it’s been so long since I had one of them I almost forgotten what they look like. lol

Keep your teeth as clean as possible, floss and do your 6 months visit to your dentist in the long run it will spare you a lot of pain.

    Take care

I've been obsessive about dental care
and pretty lucky thusfar. Lost one molar in 13 years since radiation. The hyperbaric was a PIA. My dental disease is very stable, but to preserve my teeth I've brushed with high fluoride three times a day, used fluoride trays, flossed several times a day and used mouthwash prolly six times a day. I also get cleaned and checked 3 times a year.

My dentist says there is probably as much luck and genetics in my results as there is anything else. I wonder how my teeth will stand the insult the second time.

    you can eat the bass
and they are fun to catch. Hondo I had one root canal last year which eventually failed on a back molar. My mouth opens somewhat normal but they still put some device on it to keep it open. I think that one root canal was around $1000. To his credit he refunded half the the price after it was determined the procedure failed.

    History
I have had at least 8 root canals, I have had 4 teeth domed so it is pretty much cut off at gum line, I have had many teeth repaired and some capped. Two plus years ago I had two removed by oral surgeon, no HBO just antibiotics for 30 days. Just 6-8 months ago he said that the pothole had been filled in to cover the jaw bone only and the pocket will be there. Radiation damage caused very slow healing. Root canal's were 1,000 plus the dentist work of 250.
My Dentist and hygiene work is done 2 hours east of me in Indianapolis, IN at Indiana University. They see many that have had head and neck treatment. My oral surgeon is also with Indiana U. Now the people that do the root canals are specialist in Indianapolis.
My mouth opens the new normal of 23 mm and they do not jack it open. When i did my treatments back in 96 they did not focus on any of this, but I would just take my fingers and still do now, pull my jaws apart to keep them stretched.
As far as reconstruction and the risk that goes with, I will not do that until it is the only option left. Be it know it will happen in years to come.
Also, alot of my repairs of the last 3-5 years are repair of repairs or repairs not the teeth and they do not know why.
My cleaning is three times a day. It includes a warm water waterpic, floss, bioteen dry mouth tooth paste with Sonicare tooth brush, more waterpic and then fluoride treatment put on with Sonicare tooth brush. These are done after breakfast, lunch and then before bed. I have not had any new damage too teeth in 9 months doing it this way.
I spent 180,000 for my treatments back in 1996 with out of pocket 15,000. On my teeth I have spent something over 45,000 out of pocket over the years post treatment.

Point.... cleaning teeth along with maintaining PMA are the two most important parts of post treatment years.

I would rather share here so others can see how important dental care is.

    Hi Ratface

I am very afraid of root canal failure as I have already had 3 before I ever did radiation treatment. So what’s to say it will be any better now after treatment, kind of wait and see I guess?

    Hi John

I try to do all I can to take care of the teeth but with only 12mm to 14mm of opening you can’t do much. Now that I can get the 20mm I can do a little more but I am afraid the damage is already there. My Oncal doctor did not give me much help in the beginning with what needs to be done because like he said I did not expect you to live, what faith he had in his own work. Anyway I am on the right path now I believe just need a plan and stick to it.

Sharing here is what helps us all to know what to expect what is coming. Just wish I knew about CSN back when I first started rather then 7 years later, but at lease I did finally find it

    Thanks

    Hi osmotar

I can’t use a fluoride tray because it makes my gums swell but the Water pic thing is a good idea. I was using the shower head on stream and washing the mouth out with warm water, it is ok but don’t get everything.

    Thanks

My dentist does not like trays, he said that is why i have so many problems. The trays do not do the gum lines and below the gum line. The Sonicare tooth brush pushes it in the gum lines. I mostly brush the gum line at a 45 degree angle to the line.

    Hope they work for you.

I have the long thin brush area. it's the one for gums. I love it as it does all the work for you and you do not put pressure on it just let it float. Like I said before hold it at 45 degree to gum line. That way it pulls the gums away from teeth and cleans it out. The other help is it seems to message the teeth. Use it on your tongue to get all the crap off. I actually used some on roof when I first started to use it. Once cleaner I did not have to do this. Since I been using it for 7 years now I have had very few new decay area's, where I used to have 3-4 new ones every three months.

They have them at some stores. Best money I have spent on my teeth.

    yes
Yes Linda it does, keep in mind you should not push hard with this electric toothbrush as it does not work as well if you do, I pretty much just hold with two or three fingers. The other that is nice is the timer, every 30 sec. it hesitates so divivid your mouth into quadrants of 4 and use the full 30 sec. in each area. I focus alot on the back ones as they are the hardest to reach and been told and experience they are the first one's to break down from decay.

Will have to find one of these, cause even using a reg toothbrush, I can't or don't do a great job with the back molars.
