I can't believe it. This stupid poison is now making my fingernails come off.

Has anyone ever had that happen?

PS Do you think I can glue fake fingernails to the nailbeds....LOL

    What chemo are you on? I am taking Taxotere/Carbo and have heard that can be one of the dreaded side effects. I just started treatment and no problems yet, but I was told you can paint your nails a dark color and that helps prevent them coming off. Something to do with the UV light reacting with the nails.?? Also, tea tree oil is supposed to be helpful for nail problems.

    I lost both my big toenails. My fingernails turned colors but I didn't lose them. I kept them cut very short and used the smelly tea tree oil. The good news: they do come back normal.

    That is exactly what I am on Taxotere/Carbo. I have had more side effects on this chemo than any I have had so far. Tomorrow will be my 5th treatment. I had a rash break out on my arms. Last treatment my hands swelled up and I couldn't even hold a fork. Then my skin shed just like a snake. They went back to normal. Now my fingernails. Makes me nervous about what is next.

    Nails
    Linda, I lost my big toenail twice, but so far so good on the fingernails. It is listed as one of the possible side effects for taxol. Bummer!

    Toe nails
    I lost the nails of both middle toes. they first formed a big ridge and then eventually just popped off. didn't hurt at all and grew right back. Very weird but manageable. No biggie.

    I lost both big toenails and had tips glued on for some special event, but I wouldn't do it on a regular basis. For one thing, it does not hold well and you will frequently look down and realize that you are missing one...or three.

    Chemo kills fast-growing cells. That's why we lose our hair, and sometimes nails, as well as brain cells.

    They now use an oral chemo pill to terminate ectopic pregnancies (a fetus is composed of very fast-growing cells). It saves the woman's fallopian tube and is ever so much less invasive than surgery.

    Carlene: while you are correct regarding chemo killing rapidly dividing cells, brain cells are not in that category. That's why the professionals denied the existence of "chemo brain" for a long time. There isn't even a diagnostic code for chemo brain! Anyway, I don't know if brain cells are directly damaged by chemo or indirectly affected. In some people, chemo brain is reversible, too. Just wanted to clear that up.

    I began to notice that my fingernails were turning dark and then some seemed infected . I am hoping that they'll grow out of it.
