What is new mixed groundglass & mild FDG uptake?

in Head and Neck Cancer #1
These were words used by the Rad/Ocologist report of my latest PET-CT. He doesn't want to see me until January when we will do another PET-CT. Under the section Tumor Status he states NED.

New words/terms that I'm hoping someone can share their knowledge before I email him for a explanation.

    Happy to hear the NED. Do not know the definition of the words but John's research definition makes sense to me.

    FDG Uptake & Ground Glass
    These are both descriptions that I found when Googling the terms;

    FDG
    The way I understand it FDG stands for Fludeoxyglucose which is the form of glucose injected into the body for for the imaging. Mild uptake shows a small concentrated area, but doesn't necessarily mean cancer...it very well can just be residual, infection a number of things that your MD's will determine if it's something to take action on, observe, or dismiss....

    Similarly with Ground Glass,

    Ground Glass
    "ground glass" possibly means the appearance of diffuse scattered clumps of cells or very tiny granules that are picking up the FDG - appears on the scan just like ground glass would look. Again, this could be inflammation or infection.

    Well I guess we're in the observing phase until the next scan. He sounded upbeat when he called with the official results "everything looks fine" but the medical jargon in the report had me guessing.

    NED! Great! And - your next appointment is in four months? Were they previously three months apart? Keep up the good checkups.

    This was the term used to describe the small area that showed up on my chest CT in February. They then just thought it was scar tissue from my bilateral neck radiation. A subsequent Chest CT in June indicated whatever was there in February was gone. It was then written off as "inflamation from an unknown source."

    Appointment Cycle
    Since completion of treatment in March of 2010 I have been on 4 month cycle with both my ENT & Rad/Onco doctors. They have it set up so that the appts. are 2 months apart and staggered with alternating visits. Hopefully after a clean report in January it will be moved out to every 6 months, god willing!

    John is right, I need to stop reading the reports. What caused my concern is the other things mentioned in the report.

    "New mixed groundglass and solid nodule in the right middle lobe with mild FDG uptake. Bronchoalveolar carcinoma often has this appearance although metastatic disease is certainly possible given the history of head and neck cancer"

    I guess it's just time to pull a Alfred E.Newman, "What me Worry?" My fate is in Gods hands and he's done a great job for quite some time.
