    Prayers to you & Luis
Hoping all has gone well for you & Luis, Laura! We need to hear good things. You and Luis are the 1st of the "Junior class" to make the trek. Clear a good and solid path for us. I believe we all barrel along behind you in just a matter of short weeks.

Prayers, positive thoughts & energy directed to you!

    Luis' surgery
Luis did have his MIE surgery on Tuesday! All went well. It lasted 9 and a half hours. They found less Barrett's than they expected and took out a bunch of lymph nodes (surgeon didn't count - will find out from pathology). The surgeon said that they took some extra tissue and wrapped it around the anastimosis to help prevent leaking. He has 5 little incisions on his chest and 3 on this right side. He was in recovery for 3 hours before they moved him to ICU. I finally got to see him about 9 pm on Tuesday night. I stayed until midnight, when the night nurse kicked me out.

He had a rough night the first night because the pain meds they had him on weren't working. As the anesthesia wore off, he started to get into more and more pain. Finally, yesterday afternoon they found the right combo of pain meds and he has been feeling much better. He did get to sit in a chair for a while and walked 3 times yesterday and is doing his breathing exercises.

Last night he did have a better night and they are planning on moving him out of ICU today. They are also going to start his tube feeds today. He is starting to cough and sound a little "junky" but the nurse says that is a good thing. So, considering how major, major this surgery is, I think he is doing amazingly well. One of the nurses here said that this surgery is even more major than a quadruple bypass!

A note for the caregivers: my husband did kind of freak out the night before the surgery. I can understand that this is quite scary to undergo. But focusing on why he was doing this and being grateful for being able to have this surgery really helped. And on a more personal note, praying also helped calm his fears and gave him a sense of peace.

We are hoping and praying that Jeff, Jeff, John, Nick and Michael all have successful surgeries with quick healing, minimal pain, and awesome outcomes! And for the caregivers, peace and strength as you help your loved one through this time.

    Great news Laura!
It sounds like things went as well as can be expected for Luis. These next few days are the hardest part but you’ll be surprised how quickly things start to improve. The fact that Luis got up to walk three times the day after surgery is a fantastic sign, and speaks volumes to the type of person he is. Just make sure he keeps moving and he’ll feel the rewards of his efforts soon.
    Regards,

Your update and message of good news, success, and positive things following brings us all hope.

Glad you mentioned Luis' fears. Nick is scared to death. He knows that there are not acceptable alternatives, not when surgery is an option, but this surgery is a big scary thing. Helps to know that he's not alone in those fears. You'll have to ask Luis for me - was it as bad as he worried about?

Prayers & positive thoughts & energy to you for quick healing. Best wishes to us all moving foward!

Glad to hear Luis's surgery went well. Sounds like he's doing great. I can understand his fears the night before.....I'll probably be experiencing them shortly but I know where the peace that passes all understanding comes from. I pray for strenghth for you and Luis as you guys begin this road to recovery.

    Michael & fear.....................
Michael, Love the verse you quoted. I have also claimed it and it has sustained me in my times of fear.

Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (New King James version) I like the KJ version because I truly feel the Lord "guard" and watching out for me.

Regarding the pre-surgery heebie-jeebies............ We had a 6 hour drive to Mayo Clinic and had planned to drive ourselves. About a week before surgery my husband said " I can't do it!" This was the guy who had experienced calm all the way from diagnosis to this point. He was at peace with the Lord and had put himself in the Lord's hands early in life and during this time. We told our family and friends and his brother, brother's wife, and our wonderful, wonderful friends Mike and Louise, picked him up, drove him to Rochester, and were by his side as he walked into surgery the next day. They stayed by his side, and mine, for 3 full days and nights. Our daughter and son were also with us until later in the week. He just needed a little TLC. His faith wasn't tested, but he is human and fear was real.

For those who have upcoming surgeries. I know how you are feeling and I wish you peace and good outcomes. Successful sugeries, and good follow up scans. If you need support don't be afraid to ask for it. Sometimes people really want to help and just don't know how to. It is a scary time, but you can do it! Linda

    GREAT NEWS!!!!
    Laura,
Great to hear that Luis is on the other side of the junior class and is OUT of surgery!
I wish him a VERY speedy recovery and will ad him to my prayer list.
I wish for you all the calm and strength you will need to help him recover and gain strength.

It's really encouraging to read about his surgery and that he was walking the day after!
That is miraculous! Sounds like a VERY strong man indeed.

I will look forward to updates and progress reports as you have time, and look forward to the day that Luis comes HOME!

So, congratulations on a successful surgery again, and may things ONLY go uphill from here!

    Glad to hear from you!
    Laura,
I am so glad you were able to post and let us know how Luis is doing. It sounds like the healing process has begun and he is doing everything he can to help himself get better One Day at a Time! I am grateful that you mentioned the night before and the anxiety he was experiencing. I am kind of freaking out myself (in private) and John's surgery is a week away. I know what a BIG surgery this is and if I think too long I freak myself out. I all notice the last couple days that John is kind of sullen and upset. Maybe not upset more like uneasy so I think he is going to have even more anxiety, as we get closer to next Friday. On the positive side he is talking about things he is going to do around the house once he recovers. You& Luis are in my thoughts and I am sending positive thoughts in your direction for a speedy recovery. Luis is at the head of the Junior class and you are showing us the way.
    Thanks again for posting
