Dad is coming home

My dad is coming home from the nursing home as the insurance company decided that for us. He is able to get up and take quite a few assisted steps (walking). I am worried for my mom and dad. My dad is nervous about going home and my mom will be his caregiver. This all happened (him going home) within 2 days--thanks insurance! She is nervous too. She is resigning from her job. Any advice? Wow what a loaded question. I think I just need some prayers of strength. All of you have that, more than I. I will be visiting them in 2 weeks. I am so worried...he will be home in a few hours.

    Sorry to hear that your dad
    Sorry to hear that your dad is coming home before he and your mother are ready for it. Will he have a nurse that visits several times a week? And other people locally that can help your mother? I'm sure it's difficult being so far away. I'll pray for strength for all of you!

    I would check into the availability of a visiting nurse
    When I came home from the hospital after my surgery both my wife and I were nervous for the first few weeks about our ability to deal with the many medications and the feeding tube. And of course, I was not to steady on my feet at that time either. Our surgeon arranged to have a visiting nurse come to our house every other day for the first few weeks to help us.

    They were wonderful. They helped my wife get comfortable with the feeding pump and formula required. They changed the dressings on my surgical wounds and explained any questions we had about medications.

    It also gave us comfort to know that someone with a medical background was going to be there to take vitals and generally check to see if anything needed to addressed.

    Most medical insurance policies will cover at least some visiting nurse visits if the appropriate "order" is written by your surgeon or primary care physician.

    Yes, my mom with the help of the nursing home (great staff) helped with the transition. He opted to remove the feeding tube and he has been eating more since he has been home. He will also have physical therapy 2-3 times a weeks in addition to the nurse. I think the nurse will be coming every other day (not too sure, I can't remember). My parents also have wonderful neighbors living next door that are just wonderful people (good old fashioned 'neighbors')and are willing to help any way they can. A big adjustment for the both of them, but I think being home will really do a lot of good for him. My family and I will be there in one week! He can't wait to see his grandaughter!
