Looking for survival stories for ovarian cancer with mets to lung. My mom is in the hospital and had nodules on her lung biopsied yesterday. Ovarian cancer is suspected - it will be a week until we know. I would love to hear any survivor stories out there.

My mom was diagnosed 2 + years ago in April with stage IV primary peritoneal cancer(which is treated like ovarian cancer) and her cancerous fluid had spread to her lungs at that time. She didn't have lesions in her lungs, but the cancer was in the fluid. Gather your strength. This is a fierce time in your life. I would be happy to answer more questions if I can. Email me at ejward@ameritech.net if you would like. Sometimes I forget which posts to check on this board.

Of utmost importance is having a fantastic gyno-oncologist if this is Ovarian Cancer. Where do you live?

So sorry to hear you have joined this group, but we are all trying our best to get through everything together.

Cancer cells in the plueral fluid
Me too. I had cancer cells in the fluid around my lungs the same as Eileen's mother. I don't have lesions on my lungs but I it has put me at stage 4 PPC.

The chemo I have used has been very effective and has been able to keep my cancer stable. I also believe that the samce chemo - Carbo/taxol can also be used in the treatment of lung mets.

    Good luck Tina xx

    Did you have a pleural
Did you have a pleural effusion? My mom has had hers drained twice in two weeks and only 4 days ago and it is back already. We're really scared - it is hard to get answers here.

    Plueral effusion
Yes, I was diagnosed with the plueral effusion as when they tested the fluid they found the cancer cells. I ended up having 3 litres drained from the right lung and then a week later about 2 litres from the left lung. But the good thing for me was that my doctor was able to do a procedure called "plueradesis" to my right lung. This is where once the fluid has been drained they put medicated talc into the space to cause the 2 sufaces to stick together. This stops anymore fluid coming back. Its been fantastic. Trouble is they haven't been able to do the other lung because they haven't been able to completely drain it.

On the good side, as soon as I started chemo the fluid went away. Chemo kills the cancer cells that make the fluid. The cancer cells also block up the drainage points so the fluid can't drain away. So as soon as the chemo kicks in the drainage point are un-blocked and the fluid is able to drain away. As the chemo starts working and kills off the cancer cells then there is nothing to produce the fluid (cancer cells weep the fluid)

I was really scared when I couldn't breathe. In the hospital I couldn't walk to the bathroom and the nurse had to take me in the wheelchair. I am a normal weight and used to be a runner so you can imagine how scared and frustrated I was. This was Nov 2010

But now I am ALMOST fluid free :) I can still feel a little bit there but I can swim 30 lengths without stopping because I went on chemo.

I have told you all of this to show you that they will be able to offer your mum treatment to give her her quality of life back.

Good luck, let me know how you go on, Tina xx

    My Mom passed away on
My Mom passed away on Wednesday the 29th. We only had the diagnosis 2 weeks and the doctor figured she had cancer about 5 months. He said it was a very aggressive cancer and am still waiting on more tests.

I'm so happy you are doing well! Please keep me posted on how you are doing.

Sorry to hear about your mom
Sherri: You must still be in shock--it's so hard to believe that your mom is gone already. I am so sorry that everything happened so fast and that your mom is gone now.

(((hugs to you and your family)))

My mom passed away on Monday
My mom passed away on Monday the 27th. I know how hard this is for you. I had to face the decision to pull all life saving measures from my mom. I still have memories burnt in my head. I always thought I could do it. I followed my mom's wishes, but it has a profound effect on me. When it was down to the last minute, I did not have the strength to let my mom go, but I knew it was for the best. She had masses in her lungs. I wish you the best, Sherri.

    Ending the suffering
Sherri: my heart goes out to you! I wish that I would be allowed to pull the plug on myself if that decision had to be made. I don't want my kids haunted by such memories. When I had to make the decision for the family dog, it was agonizing yet comforting that I could help end his suffering.
