Today's episode of Dr. Oz is talking about the rise of oral cancer that is caused by HPV. mine wasn't related to HPV, but it is important for everyone to know that Oral Cancer can hit anyone, especially now that there is a known link with HPV.

    HPV
Yep! My husband was HPV positive so now I see a Dentist that will test you for it. Only cost $50, well worth it. Find a dentist that will check you for it. Of course if you test positive that doesn't mean you will get cancer, but it's just another tool to keep you healthy. Take care, Donna

    Hmmmm
Donna, you might want to find the specifics on how that dentist checks for HPV....

From everything I've read and heard from MD's, there are no specific tests unless you have a suspect area...such as a growth and biopsy, especially in men.

Women can be checked via their annual exams (if requested).....

Here's a URL for the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention - CDC. Also stating there is no current routine test for men specifically.

    CDC - HPV Testing

Is there a test for HPV in men?
"Currently, there is no test to find HPV in men. The only approved HPV tests on the market are not useful for screening for HPV-related cancers or genital warts in men."

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions and investigations....this just supports everything that I have found.

    HPV test?
there is a test. Dr. Oz talked about it. it involves a light to check for suspicious areas and then a brush that is very similar to a pap smear brush used on women to scrape some of the area, it is then rubbed on a slide and sent off for testing, just like with a pap smear. pap smears can detect HPV in women, and this test is an oral version of it.

    Brush test
I don't think the brush test is an hpv test. It's basically testing any leukoplakia or red patches for dysplasia or abnormal cell activity. That may or may not have anything to do with hpv. I have had a biopsy of a leukoplakia under my tongue. Wish it could have been brushed. If this should be an issue again, hope not, i will ask about the brush test first.

    Suspicious Areas
Ekdennie ~ If you look at what you are saying, and what I said above about female annual exams (I just didn't say specifically pap smear), I think you are basically saying the same thing.

Also, concerning pap smears...I don't know for sure if they automatically check for HPV unless it may be suspect in that person, or it's requested..could be wrong on that though. But most I have read, tends to make believe they don't automatically test for HPV.

The two tets that Dr. Oz mentioned (also Dawn - sweetblood) are screenings for cancer, not HPV....

The first is the Velscope, which sees early changes in the cells in the mouth where they become dysplastic or unhealthy.

The second is the Oral CDX brush, similar to a pap smear only for your mouth.
