I AM STILL DANCING WITH NED

Praise God
I am still cancer free, God has answered my prayers yet again. I will no longer have to get PET scans unless my blood counts start to go up. I can now get my port taken out of my chest and be back to normal again.
God bless you all for praying for me and my family
Hugs Lynda

    NED
Good for you, AZGrandma! May you have a lifetime of NED.

Unfortunately, the declaration of "no evidence of disease" is about the best state that the medical people will allow us to believe we are in after successful treatment.

Other people who go through successful cancer treatment get to be called "cured" but not us. Or is this the new medical term that every person diagnosed with cancer has to deal with now?

I was telling my husband that I wish we could allow ourselves to THINK in terms of being "cured" after a period of time rather than just having NED. It makes me think of those people in AA forever calling themself an alcoholic whether or not they still drink alcohol.

My husband said, "Maybe it is better not to be called "cured" because women will take better care of themselves while in remission to avoid the disease recurrence." Yeah, as if we knew what that was! OK, I know he means well.

    Here's an interesting story:

Someone with kidney failure received a kidney from a donor who had been cured of malignant melanoma 10 years or more prior to their demise. The kidney recipient took the necessary immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection of the kidney and ALSO got malignant melanoma. I don't remember if they were cured or not but I think not.

    SUPER!
So happy for you. May I ask how far from your original dx are you. I am approaching my 2 yr mark in May; have been NED since finishing chemo Nov/09. Just wondering because of the port removal, etc. Again I am so happy for you and thank you for sharing!
