in Colorectal Cancer #1
Today (3/4/11) was "Wear Blue Day" for colorectal cancer awareness. To those of you who weren't aware, it was created on Facebook by Donna's daughters. To those of you who are new- Donna was a well loved CSN member here who passed away last year.
I just wanted to let you know how much I was moved by what my former teachers and staff at the school where I used to teach did for me today- they all wore blue and had their picture taken holding two signs, one that said "We Love you Lisa" and another saying "We Love you Kim" (Kim is another teacher who ended up with the same kind of cancer- we see each other usually every time I get chemo, as she gets it those days too).
I posted the picture on my Expressions page, if anyone cares to look at it. They are an awesome bunch of teachers- you wouldn't believe all they did for me when I was first diagnosed with this 3-1/2 years ago. Literally every time I went in for chemo the whole 5 months that I got Folfox, there was a gift basket waiting for me at the chemo center- they'd take turns making up the gifts bags and bringing them in. Since they're all busy teachers, in lieu of meals, they took up a collection and gifted my family with over $1,000 in restaurant gift cards and grocery store cards. I was reminded again today of how awesome they are :)

    That's so cool
    I wore my blue today! It's so nice that your co workers supported you like that. When I left my job for good recently, all my boss did was rip me off, because his business is failing due to the economy. It's nice to hear a positive story.

    i wanted to let u know that
    i wanted to let u know that I am also a colon/liver survivor. I'm 1 1/2 yrs into this. I was made aware of the colon cancer awareness day also. I also work in a school environment and some of my teachers wore blue for me yesterday also.
    What a wonderful group of people that you worked with!

    This does not surprise me at all that your co-workers did this for you... it shows just how much of an impact you made on them BEFORE the dx, and now it's their way of letting you know that they are behind you all the way. What a lovely gesture!

    I have a few stories like that as well and when I'm having a "down" day, I pull out the reminders that there's a lot more to life than fretting about the down days :) Hey, that's not to say we aren't entitled to having time to feel a little sorry for what we are having to go through... but when we are touched by such wonderful friends and supporters, it's hard to stay down for long... so congratulations that you have these wonderful folk in your life!

    How wonderful they take the time to remember you. When George finished is first round of chemo (Oxi) his co-workers and clients threw him a big party at work, including everyone wearing a special T-shirt, he was truly moved as I know you were.

    Hello All,

    I found this under my coffe table this morning as I was cleaning up the broken glass. My husband, who has a badly burned foot, stood up from the couch and lost his balance and fell throught the glass. Anyway, I don't remember where I copied it from, but it goes like this.

    Two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey, they had an argument and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything wrote in the sand. "Today my best friend slapped me in the face." They kept on walking until they found an oasis where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone. "Today my best friend saved my life." The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone, why?" The friend replied "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away, but when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it." Learn to write your hurts in the sand and to carve your benefits in stone. They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

    What a great group of teachers! It amazes me how compassionate and caring people can be. We don't always hear all the good things people do for others. You truly are a special lady that is loved by many, many people. I think of you often and pray that things are going well.
