I would like to ask who is doing the flouride trays? How often, and for how long do you leave them in. I have been doing them since radiation was over, about 10 weeks, every day , leaving them in about 30 min. My concern is the cancer that fluroide can cause. This is an old topic of conversation, but I recently read an article refreshing my memory about cancer and fluoride. Any one have any insight to this spicifically?
Thanks,
Debbie

I keep cvetching that I will
I keep cvetching that I will probably keel over from fluoride poisoning before anything else gets me. I use the trays for 30 min. every day. I also have a boost to brush with plus another white paste I use in trays everyday for ten mins. My teeth are just distenegrating. I have NO saliva. I brush five times a day. I was worried about the fluoride but if my mouth is this bad doing what I am doing I think I'd have no teeth left if I didn't use it. :( Don't know what to tell you kiddo.

    Fluoride Trays...
I use fluoride trays every day...and will have to for the rest of my life. I use them for 10 minutes every night (and don't eat/drink for at least 30 minutes afterwards). I also floss and brush after every meal, using Sensodyne toothpaste. I have been doing this since mid-June; started treatment (radiation 2x daily, weekly chemo) on June 28th 2010 and finished August 12th, so I'm sort of a newbie. But so far, teeth seem okay (saw dentist and periodontist in Oct and Nov respectively). The pharmaceutical company (Cypress) that manufactures the 1% sodium fluoride I use recommends application for 10 minutes as does my dentist. Fluoride can be dangerous and it is very corrosive and caustic. I'm no MD but I am surprised about 30 minutes of contact time.

    about fluoride trays
I went to the dentist last week and I asked about this and my dentist would not give them to me because I could not open my jaw all the way and he told me I might have TMJ/TMJD so he referred me to a doctor treats TMJ/TMJD but in the mean time he told me to use fluoride mouth wash. FYI if you get radiation/chemo in the head/neck area you might get TMJ/TMJD by the way I am 6 months post treatments when I found out this.

    Flouride Trays
Debbie, I am also using the trays, every evening before I hit the hay. I was instructed to keep them in for a minimum of 5 minutes. At my last dentist appointment, she told me to bring my trays with next time and she would make a new pair if needed. Seems they will be in use for quite a while, if not longer. Cheers

    Flouroide Treatment
    Hi Debbie,
I used the trays daily for a couple of years after radiation treatment, but then I had problems finding the gel at the drug stores, so I stopped. My dentist, at that point, recommended that I use a flouroide rinse, which I have been doing for the past 8 years. So far, my teeth have been healthy. I know that doesn't really address your question regarding the cancer-flouroide connection, but I wanted to share my experience which is a little unusual regarding not continuing to use the trays. I brush with Biotine PBF, and rinse with Biotine PBF mouthwash. I rinse onse nightly with Phos-Flur. Take care.

Yeah. Lol. I'd be a Shiksa who cannot spell. :) I grew up with many Jewish friends. In my neighborhood there were two temples. You were either italian or irish and roman catholic or Jewish. I was Italian and Roman Catholic.

    t-paste ?
So what tooth pastes / gels should be used? and how do dentists decide on this?
THere are so many different types around, it seems as it depends on what the company reps reps bring in.

    Hi Debbie

I don’t use the fluoride tray as my gums swell because of fluoride so what my dentist does is to have me use a fluoride paste once a day at night right before I go to bed. I don’t know the name of the stuff but can get it for you is you like.

    Take care and be safe

    Yep, trays
I've got the trays, and was prescribed a pink Prevident jell to use in them. I also use Prevident toothpaste. Seems like I brush and floss after every single thing I eat, probably five times a day, because my mouth is so dry, everything sticks to my teeth. RE: the trays, they make me gag, so I can really only use either the tops or the bottoms, but never together. I don't use them daily, but about four times a week I will be wearing either the top or the bottom tray. My dentist told me to keep them in for half an hour. eeek. So far, so good, but its only been about nine months since treatment.

    Clearblue - tooth pastes.
I know you're not in the States so I don't know what's available to you. My dentist prescribes the Prevident 5000 paste and Prevident 5000 Boost gel for me. One goes in my trays and then the other I brush with once a day. PreviDent is a prescription Colgate product. This perscription is 1.1% sodium fluoride. I think normal toothpaste is .25% , I think. Then he gives me a GC MI Paste Plus. It contains Recaldent. This can be spread on my teeth or used in trays also. Then as just my 'normal' toothpaste I have Biotene paste to brush with, Biotene rinse, Biotene mouth spray when dry during the day and biotene oral balance dry mouth moisturizer gel for at night.

    learning stuff here
wow, some people use them during the day, always thought I had to do it before bedtime and honestly I don't feel like doing it when I'm really tired. Will try that. Also I use Nupro Fluoride .9 flouride Ion and it says to use 1-4 min? Seems some are using up to thirty minuetes? Hell, I'd go crazy.

    Ratface, maybe the time
Ratface, maybe the time depends on the paste you are using. I did look at my RX and it says 10 minutes on the one tube, but I known dentist told me a half hour. Who knows. My days and nights are all backwards. I'm a terrible night owl. I think they want you to use the trays at night because they don't want you to eat or drink after for as long as possible. I do them before bed sometimes but I do better consistently with doing them after my dinner brushing. I have a whole after dinner routine. I do it about 7-8pm and then I do sometimes have an after dinner snack at midnight and after that is when I brush with my Boost. I figure doing it then is better than not at all and that is when it works best for me. That's a good four hour block of not eating or drinking.

    Hi Tim
The problem with your Jaw is due to radiation treatment what you need is your Doctor to get you on therapy and start using a jaw opening device. What ever you do don’t let anyone try to force your jaw open as it will break the lower jaw bone and you will need a jaw replacement. There are a few devices on the market you can use to help, one is a Dynasplint very expensive but my jaw is so bad it is the only thing I can use. The others are Theribite and one other that I can’t remember the name.

    Take care and keep strong

I've got to make it routine
because I'm just not doing it enough. They sit on the kitchen counter and I stare at them. I have to be done eating and not plan on eating for some time. I think I would do better moving them to the bathroom and doing them late afternoon. I've got to get consistent like you, Sweet. I'm betting we all have different brands and prescriptions as far as duration?

    Routine
Yep, that's exactly it. You just need to find what works for you and do it consistently. I really do feel like all I do is eat and brush oral hygiene.

    Routine
    Ratface,

Just as you and Sweet mentioned, a routine is needed and finding what works best for you to do this each day is the important part. Like you mentioned, you are going to move your trays to the bathroom. That is exactly where mine are.

I brush my teeth with biotene toothpaste first, then use Perio-Check Stannous Flouride in the trays. I then take a shower with the trays in. After I get dressed, I remove the trays and let the flouride set on my teeth for 30 minutes. Then rinse as per the Cancer Dentist instructions. I haven't had any problems except for the 2 teeth that I chipped by eating some hard food roughly 1 year out of treatment. Learned a hard lesson there and had to have the 2 teeth capped.

The Doctor has recently switched me to Previ-Dent tooth Gel and I use the battery powered Oral-B toothbrush with the softest brush on it. I am now able to let the Gel set at least 2 times a day. Once after breakfast for 30 minutes and then at night when I go to sleep. I get up and rinse my mouth before sipping any water due to dry mouth. Which is usually about 90 minutes later.

    Yes, a routine
I also use the "PreviDent 5000 for Dry Mouth" which I use a soft brush to brush with 3 times a day. I probably go through 3 brushes a month. For the trays, I use "Colgate Gel-Kam".....a preventave treatment gel. I'm going on 20 months post treatment, and pretty much have a morning routine of arising....taking off Face Caddy for Turkey Neck.....putting on house shoes to go get the morning paper....fixing ice coffee...eating an egg and biscuit or some such....brushing with PreviDent....then squeezing the gel in the trays, then letting them stay on my teeth while I put on my day clothes and socks/shoes. By that time, it's time to take out the trays and rinse them good. I'm probably not suppose to do this, but I then rinse my mouth with cold water. There is way too much Cinnamon taste in my mouth to keep from rinsing.

    Rinse time?
    Larry,

Yes, you are probably rinsing too soon. I have recently switched from the Perio-check to the Previ-Dent. I was given a flavor called Fresh Mint which really acted as if my mouth was burning. Had tears in my eyes and I finally called my Dentist about it. He told me to stop using it and made note of it. He then sent me Previ-Dent Spear Mint and it doesn't bother me at all. Go figure ?

The main thing is to brush the flouride on, and then spit any residue out without rinsing for 30 minutes to allow the flouride to work on protecting your teeth thoughout the day until the next time you brush and let the flouride set. I was told to do it twice a day, which I am now able to do with the newer perscription of the Previ-Dent.

A few months ago, I did a search on Previ-Dent and I think they actually make an unflavored flouride which I did mention to the Dentist when I saw him. I guess he wasn't able to get it as he sent me the Spearmint instead.
