Can anyone give me any advice for my mom about the neupogen shot? She's scared to death
of needles and the idea of getting these shots has her questioning whether she'll
continue with the chemo. She has 4 infusion of carbo/taxol down with four more to go.
She's petrified of the "bone pain" that the nurse told her about. And since she had
a blood clot in her lung that makes it harder for her with pain meds. Heavy meds knock her
out and make her very anxious. She has to have 6 consecutive shots given the day
after her chemo infusion. I'm just so scared she won't do the shots and then she can't
do her chemo.

Does she have the "bone pain"?
I know we can all have varied side effects and I have had many of these injections with only a stiff neck the next day. The combination of all of the side effects and issues do become overwhelming and sometimes you just want to give up. When you get to that point, it really is tough to actually quit. I hope she can get through this.

    my mother gets them
My mother is getting chemo for recurrance, and she's been getting Neulasta shots after the last few infusions. She still has had two infusions postponed a week due to low platelets, but she's 80 and has been through a lot. I haven't noticed any side effects from the shot, and Mom has never mentioned soreness from the injection, like you get with a flu shot. Don't worry, your Mom will probably breeze through it.

    neupogen
I self inject neupogen as needed. I never had any real problems to speak of. I also have taken Neulasta. I believe Neulasta has a higher incidence of bone pain. Good luck!!
