PEG couldn't be placed....anyone else have that?

My husband went in to have his PEG inserted today, but after they attempted the procedure the doc says that he can't do it. We were told that his stomach sits too high and that he has a small hiatal hernia. If they placed the tube it would be right under his sternum and that would be too uncomfortable.

They gave us two options.....that radiologist could place the tube (and they have since said no, that they can't do it due to stomach location), or it can be surgically placed.

Has anyone had their tube placed surgically? Not sure what to expect since this is not what we were planning (actually, like all of us, none of this trip is what we were planning).....

    Sorry you all have hit a bump. A lady I corresponded with on another site had a PEG (G Tube) installation that ended up failing. They then surgically placed a J tube (jejunum), which goes into the upper part of the small intestine. She kept this feeding tube until treatment ended. For her, it was very similar, but less painful than the G tube (I dunno if it's normally less painful, or if her G tube was just more painful because something was wrong). Good luck.

    Mine could not be placed either. Surgeon did place mine with no problems what so ever. In fact I took a radiation treatment the afternoon after mine was placed. I was sore like any surgery and it was difficult to lie on that hard board to have radiation however I toughed it out. Tube worked well about five months. I now have what every one calls a second belly button or what looks like someone shot me in the stomach. Tube has been gone for three and a half years now, thank goodness. Check with a surgeon about placement. Good luck to you and God Bless

    Yes through IR!
    Hmm, I'm a Registered nurse and had it place mid way through treatment via interventional radiology (IR). Was an easy procedure they poke a whole in your stomach, stick the tube in and inflate the balloon like a catheter. Don't know why they are making a big deal out of it!! :(
