edited March 2014 in Breast Cancer #1
Oct 26, 2009, the day I was told I had breast cancer...it's been a year & what a year it's been. I had no clue today was going to start out so emotional. I awoke from hot flashes(tamoxifen) & decided to log on to the boards. This past year has truly been the roller coaster ride from hell. Got married, core needle biopsy("it's not cancer"), surgical biopsy("it is breast cancer"), hematoma, bilateral mastectomy, I don't have to have chemo, I do have to have chemo, I have (4) rounds of chemo, 4 trips to the ER, hives, angeodema, reconstruction, staph infection, still battling staph(5 mths after surgery), moved twice, lost my dad. I didn't know it was possible to do so many things in just 365 days. In that amount of time, I also learned the true meaning of family, friendship, & faith!!! I learned that CSN would become my lifeline, when it's time to fight the beast they are by far...WARRIORS!!! I learned to let others help me when neccessary, I learned to say "no", I learned to rest when I'm exhausted, I learned to sometimes fight the depression & get out of bed, I learned that being bald wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be, I learned that a sense of humor goes a long way, I learned that not having breasts & hair doesn't make me less of a woman, I learned that a bag of steroids can make me VERY mean(& hungry), I learned that I married the most amazing man on earth...he is my HERO, I learned when one of my CSN sister's gets good news, it makes my heart dance, I learned that when one gets bad news, it breaks my heart...love & praying for you MamaG, I learned I'm a lot tougher than I realized, I learned I had it pretty easy compared to others, I learned that just because I had both of my breasts removed, it doesn't keep me from worrying about the beast returning, I learned the cooler at the local florist is a wonderful place for hot flashes, I learned that I am very blessed by a huge wealth of friends...true friends, I learned to be thankful for another year of living.

Thanks to all of you who helped me through my difficult journey last year. You are amazing & you made my battle easier. Love you all.

    You make me proud
to call you my Sister in Pink! I've been out of treatment (except for Arimidex) since last December. People ask me how did you do it...I tell them I didn't think about it at the time I just fought for my life. Looking back on it now, I can't believe I did it either! We are all stronger than we think. You are a true warrior!

    Love,

    Patti

You made it and it was the year from hell, I'm sure of it! Your review of the happenings in such a short time, 365 days, is amazing. We all learn a lot from our battle with the beast and perhaps that's the "good" that comes out of it. I'm also proud to call you one of my pink sisters and am so happy that you made it to this place in your life. Keep up the positiveness and keep on living, most importantly! Here's to many, many more anniversaries!!

When I see your picture I just smile...you are so engaging and beautiful! You have walked the walk down a path none of us wanted to be on, and yet, you found yourself surrounded by an amazing, empathetic group of true Kindred Spirits. You of courdse, are one of our shining stars, and I am so happy that you posted to let us all know not just where last year was, but who you today ARE. We absolutely gain strength, courage and fellow feeling from these boards, don't we?
I am so happy that you are living Life After Cancer..fears and all! I have a sneaking suspicion that no matter what, you will live life with all of the gusto and big-heartedness you always have!

    Thanks for checking in!

You are indeed a TRUE Warrior Tinabug!! So many of the things you wrote are my thoughts exactly!
CSN has also been my lifeline since June 14th of this year -which was the day before i was diagnosed, I spent the sleepless night before my Dr appt to receive my biopsy results reading through the message boards.
I'm so glad for you that you made it through your journey & are healthy & recovering. I hope you have many many more years to celebrate your anniversary of being cancer free. Thank you for sharing this post - it really hit home with me on alot of levels & gives so many of us hope - I'm almost done with my cancer journey myself -got the "all clear" from my doctor & the great news of "officially in remission from breast cancer" - just have my exchange surgery & port removal surgery, followed by 5 years of Tamoxifen. I'm almost in the light at the end of the tunnel!!

TinaBug .. now the hard and most difficult part of this
journey for most of us .. Getting back to normal, and getting our mojo back. It does take a while .. Smile, rest and relax and known you crossed that finish line! Kudos to you and finishing this length and sometimes ugly battle!

    Strength and Courage
