I was bad yesterday

SO, I was in a department store buying make-up and after I purchased it, the lady TOLD me to take a pink ribbon from the big basket of them and wear it and take a brochure to be informed about breast cancer. I guess I was having a bad day. (My CA125 is up and I am awaiting my doc appointment.) Plus , since they are on commmission, she was trying to sell me everything in the department. I certainly am sensitive to breast cancer, but I told her I have ovarian cancer and walked away. She didn't even say anything. I'm tired already of the pink cloud. Sorry, I'll try to be better today!

    Pink ribbons on my egg carton AND my yogurt container this AM about sent me over the edge! I'm trying to look at it that monies for cancer research is a good thing and that new info and drugs could trickle down to possible cures for other types of cancers... probably the pollyanna in me showing. :) All that breast cancer awareness has led to newer tests for early detection and oh, baby that is what OVCA desperately needs.

    Save the OVAS and the TESTAS!! Ok- my lame sense of humor. BUT considering my ov ca. and my husbands prostate ca., if we can't find a CURE for these FIRST there will be no more TATA's to save !!! I hate all cancers- period. Y'all know the feelings all to well. My teal toes are still with me and so are my teal and blue ribbons and yellow wrist band.

    I was dz with tmo primery cancers at same time Breast cancer and Ovarian cancer.I buy two ribbons, pink and teal. I have no chois here. Clouds are clouds, doesnt matter what color. they are,they take away sun shine. I know I will die from cancer, but I dont know from breast cancer or from ovarian cancer. I just hate any color cancer. When I go for chimo treatments, I see men and women, young and old, alot of people suffering from this disease. We need a cure for cancer. I wish every body will do some thing for that.     I am sorry to hear about your having two cancers at once and yes, I agree ANY cancer is horrible. I will be praying for you that you remain strong during your trial. :)

    Cancer is cancer
    A classmate of mine posted on FB the other day that she was a 8 year survivor of breast cancer. And she was going to Washington for a walk awareness.

    I replied that I was so glad she was a breast cancer survivor and wished there was more awareness regarding ovarian.

    She later sent me an apology that she in no way was implying that breast cancer was more important than ovarian and hoped she did not hurt my feelings.

    I answered her that it takes a lot to hurt my feelings and that I was sincere in being glad she was a survivor. I only meant that it would be great to be able as women to have all the advantages of testing for ovarian cancer available to us as much as breast cancer.

    And I need to be better at providing awareness where I live. I also said cancer is cancer. To me it doesn't make a difference which a person has - any one of us can die from it and anyone of us can be healed of it.

    I have a grandfather who died at 39 of liver cancer. I have an uncle who died at 60 of cancer due to agent orange (spelling?). I have a mom who died of breast cancer at 62, a mother-in-law of breast cancer at 52, a father-in-law of esophagial cancer at 70. A first cousin who had ovarian cancer at age 23 and is still here but has had cancer in the colon 2 times since.

    Cancer is cancer. It is hard no matter which we have.

    Sorry if I sounded flip about breast cancer. My Mom had it and so many other wonderful ladies that I know are fighting breast cancer survivors. Actually, I had thyroid cancer many years before I was diagnosed with OVCA. My brother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last spring and is recovering wonderfully from a terrible ordeal.... cancer just plain sucks.

    I know how you feel, I should have added, had to get off for a moment.

    It not that we are upset about the people with (breast) cancer it is upsetting that those who have control over testings, etc. are the ones who need to get on board with Ovarian Cancer.

    We would like our daughters, granddaughters, sisters, friends, etc. to have ultra sounds, CA125s, etc. not when it is so late the disease has advanced, but early enough..............

    I do know how you feel.

    I think we all agree.... we would definitely appreciate it if ovarian cancer got as much attention as breast cancer. I never heard ANYTHING about ovarian cancer..... and it didn't even cross my mind when I had symptoms. Eventually.... I basically diagnosed myself by searching my symptoms on line. But of course with all the breast cancer attention - if I had felt a lump... or had any symptoms it would be checked quickly because it is discussed so often. I am not against pink ribbons... I just know the result of "lack of knowledge" with ovarian cancer.

    Later this week I'm taking Mom to a Think Pink reception, but I balked when she said we had to wear pink. I told her I was wearing teal AND pink, and she immediately agreed that would be our dress code, period. Team Lainey (myself and Mom's best friend) will not change its colors.

    Last night on NFL Sunday night, pink, pink, pink..I remember when the only treatment for breast cancer was massive massectomies. Horrible. I, too, at times, resent the pink and then I think about the big picture. My issue is knowing how to get the Teal message out there. Any ideas? It just feels like we are the neglected daughters.....but I am willing to do something to educate. I just lack the creativity of ideas on how to do that.

    As Carlene said in a previous post, too bad Angelina Jolie isn't more vocal. Obama's Mom died of OVCA. I wonder if we should start a letter writing campaign. Kelly Rippa does alot for ovca but she does not have the star power Angelina has. I want her to be our voice.

    I too am frustrated with only seeing pink! I am glad they have "run for the cure" and all the other charity events but I feel like what my mom has is somehow diminished. When I tell people my Mom has o/c I see them shake their heads sadly, it's like they are already picturing her funeral.

    Uterine CA that acts like ovarian CA
    I have uterine papillary serous carcinoma, the uterine cancer that looks like and acts like ovarian cancer. I had a hysterectomy in March, 5 weeks of radiation sandwiched between 6 rounds of Taxol/Carboplatin. So, since many of you ovarian cancer patients have been through the same treatment, I have been following a lot of the messages on this board. My mother & grandmother both had ovarian cancer in their 40s, so I have had serial CA 125s and yearly sonograms since I was 26 years old. My UPSC was found on a surveillance sono.

    Uterine cancer has Fran Drescher as it's spokeswoman, but uterine cancer is missed in so many women, just as ovarian is. I don't know if women on this board are familiar with NED, the rock band made up of gyn oncology surgeons. Watch this video:



    My favorite line: "Breast cancer has a pink ribbon, but gyn cancer has a ROCK BAND!!"

    oh i am so with you on this. i've nearly exploded several times already and we're only one week into this month! the radio, the newspaper, the food packaging, the phone calls at 9 pm on a sunday night (!?!?), options to donate at the supermaket and other stores.... it's just all too much. i hate cancer, and hate feeling so bitter, but i want our cancer to be in the spotlight too! i totally feel your anger, froggy. for reals.

    I have been stable on the breast cancer drug Tamoxifen for a year now and I do think aspects of these cancers that happen to women will be seen to have more overlapping features. Maybe especially for those of us who have estrogen receptors/low grade ovarian cancer. But after visiting the MD Anderson Cancer Center, I am going back to Minnesota to talk to my doctor about how I can help bring resources to the University of Minnesota. We do have to find ways locally to raise awareness, etc. but the corporations are also using breast cancer "support" by slapping a pink ribbon on their products and contributing negligible amounts to support and research. I think it's gotten out of hand - and we're experiencing "pink fatigue". Remember when Richard Nixon declared war on cancer? We have so far to go.

    I saw pink, it was constant reminder of what was growing inside me. Started hating the ribbon,
    but now am looking at it differently. After having ovarian cancer stage III I now look at myself
    as a survivor and wear both pins with pride.

    I agree ladies--wonderful that breast cancer has come a long way with treatments, dx and survivors; but Cancer is Cancer. No one with cancer is in the minority. Just look at the numbers on the posts for various cancers. In 1952 my dad died of colon cancer and the age of 32. Yes strides have been made with colon cancer but 1952 was a long time ago. It seems when someone important is affected things move along quicker. Remember the "Whitehouse ladies with breast cancer? I think the idea to write to Obama is good. Maybe he can create a stimulus pkg for cancer research.
