Hello, I was wondering if any of you have turned down a job because you felt that it would be too stressful for you? I'm 2 years post surgery and treatment for stage 3 colon cancer, and still having some emotional issues. I was offered a good job recently and everyone is telling me what an awesome opportunity; but I find that I'm struggling with the offer because I don't want to deal with the stress that comes with it. Am I being too parinoid?

Thanks guys,
Valerie

Cancer does not make you stupid
    Valerie,
Take the new job. The challenge will get you away from thinking about this cancer crap.
I do know how this cancer can come back a screw with your head. When you read on this board you can tell the folks that simply get their lives back in order by just enjoying living and doing.

Your management knows you can handle it or they would not have made the offer.

    Take away a little stress
All right, I'm not an expert here, but it seems to me, that one can live and dwell in the cancer world, which in the most STRESSFUL world to be in.... Or they can join the human race once again.
Take the job hon, get away from the cancer. And if the job doesn't work, then it doesn't work, at least you TRIED!!!

    Hi Valerie
If this is a job you think you will be happy/satisfied with try it. If you are maybe feeling it is too high stress a position, and not what you really want, don't let others pressure you into taking it just because it is such an "awesome opportunity". I have just finished going back to school, got a business computer associated degree (I'm 51) and in the process of job hunting. I have a job coach through BVR and I feel at times she is pressuring me to go for the high stress jobs and ones that would involve travel to a larger city, and that is not what I want at this point. I have made it through stage 4 CC this far, and don't want to wind up in a job I don't think I would be happy in after all I've been through. My father died from cancer, and one thing he said to me towards the end was that I had better do what I wanted NOW, to do what made me happy. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

Thanks you guys. I want to
Thanks you guys. I want to go on living my life; being as "normal" as the next guy. I think I might be a bit too cautious. I did except the job and will see how it works out. Will definitely give it my best shot.

    Sincere thanks,
    Valerie

    Take the job:
George worked throughout his cancer treatment (Folfox) and it really took him mind off cancer and all that comes with it. Cancer is about the most stressful thing out there, this job could be a walk in the park compared to cancer. If it doesn't work, well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

    Take care Tina

Live your life - cancer is
Live your life - cancer is just one of a 100 things that gonna makes us mortal. It is not the only thing and not the most important thing. Don't give it that power. I found my cancer has given more then it has taken. It reminded me we are all born with a chronic disease that we do not know when it will hit - its called mortality - sometimes in the form of cancer, sometimes in the form of a car accident - always fatal in the end.

We have stuff to do, limited time to do it, and choices everyday.

Take the job and if don't work out, you can quit and try something else. That said, I have turned down promotions because the work/life balance would shift too far to work and not enough life, so you need to be true to yourself, but not because of cancer.

I also worked all through chemo and rad will have to take time off for surgery but it made me forget sometimes about the cancer. My co-workers have been wonderful and are giving me their paid time off for my surgery. Give it a try. Laura
