Defined: Pancaking

This is when the output collects around the stoma and can squeeze between the flange and the skin instead of going into your bag. One of the reasons this happens is because there isn’t enough air in the bag and so the output doesn’t take a downwards turn.

If this happens try lubricating your bags with baby oil or one of the many products available from the various supply companies. Squirt a little oil or gel into your bag and give it a good rub around before you stick it on. Take care not to get any on the adhesive as this can reduce the effectiveness of the seal. Covering the filter with one of the sticky patches that are supplied in each box of stoma bags will prevent a vacuum forming inside the bag.

Defined: Pancakes

A pancake is a thin, flat cake prepared from a batter and cooked on a hot griddle or frying pan. Most pancakes are quick breads; some use a yeast-raised or fermented batter. Most pancakes are cooked one side on a griddle and flipped partway through to cook the other side. Depending on the region, pancakes may be served at any time, with a variety of toppings or fillings including jam, fruit, syrup or meat.

OPTIONS :

1) You have the option of IHOP (International House of Pancakes) or ........
2) IHOP (International Hollister of Prosthesis')...most all ostomates will know what I am referring to as Hollister is one of a variety of manufacturers of prosthetic devices for the ostomy patient...

Something that I have picked up that is particularly a good side of ostomy pancaking...
Although being kind of icky feeling like a bloated constipated mule, pancaking of the stoma actually covers the musical notes made by gassing and can be used as a "muffler" if you will..I have often been in the pancaking mode of bowel movement and have noticed that even though it is unnormal in my new normal every day life it does make it where I can go anywhere I want like church, library, or the Post Office again and not have the worry about "sounding off" as I have before. So, with every cloud there is a silver lining, we just have to take the time and effort to realize that sometimes the worst case scenario can be turned to use favorably if enough thought is placed into it. My thoughts are that the "pancaking" that occurs naturally in our bags is a gift of silencing the gas that would normally embarrass us in public. Now all the manufacturers have to do is incorporate this into a device to place in bags that will accomplish the same end result as "pancaking" does.....becoming a "FART MUFFLER"...and also send me a check every month for royalties which I will gladly donate to the bills I have incurred.......Love to all, Buzz

    Clift,
As a new ostomate you really made me laugh. A month ago I wouldn't have understood this, but you put a big grin on my face today.
