PEG Removal

Got the PEG I've had for over 15-months out this morning. Surgeon who installed was the one who yanked it out, along with little advice:

1) Can eat and drink as I normally would, but in less quantity for a few days.

2) There will be seepage, so keep the hole covered w/gauze, and apply Bacitracin during the gauze changes. Anything else recommended? And how long might I expect it to take before the PEG tubing hole gets naturally closed, and I stop leaking?

Told him about my activity on this ACS website, and how I knew what he was about to do. Asked him about the 4-hour delay for food or drink intake, and he acted like that was the first he heard of it! I kinda wonder about him, you know. SO- any and all advice on helping to get the hole sealed ASAP, and via the healthy route, is most welcome.

    PEG removal

When I had mine removed I got plenty of Tylenol with codeine LOL
I was never told anything about not drinking or eating and had no seepage(like your basement). My Peg incision healed up in a couple of days and was able to remove the bandages. Like you I had antibacterial ointment to apply. After reading all these posts it looks like no two doctors do anything the same. Congrats on the removal. Best Wishes

    Congrats!!
Glad you are able to have yours taken out. I think that leaves me as the one who has had her peg the longest on the board. ?? :) 14 months and counting. I hope I can get rid of this thing at some point too.

Kent, Great to hear you had
Kent, Great to hear you had your tube out! I got mine out after 4 months after my last rad. They wanted to make sure I was on the upswing for gaining weight back before they would remove it. Funny thing is I lost about 4 pounds after it was taken out. I realized that because of the dry mouth and throat issues I have, I was drinking water in equal amounts to the food I was eating, a sip with every bite, so I basically am on a liquid diet. Its great though, for I wanted to lose a few more pounds anyways.
As far as seepage, I leaked out for about 3 to 4 days. It really didnt take that long, and I ate regular food the next morning after it was ripped out, and yes he pretty much just ripped mine out. I had the balloon style, he removed the roughly 10ccs of air that was injected at the time it was installed, then he just gave it a good yank. No pain meds, only hurt for that initial yank. I didnt even keep any kind of antibacterial ointment on it. Just kept it covered with a gauze until the leaking stopped. It was a little bit bloody mixed with just fluid. He said it would heal from the inside out. That it would heal in kind of a cork screw style. Its been about a month now and no probs, except it looks like a have a second misplaced belly button. And apparently that will eventually close off and it will look like a slight indention in my skin and that's all.

    Great news again Kent,

    Get out the Lingerie !!
Great new Kent !I have been waiting for this since I first joined as you must have the PEG record.

I had a couple of stitches in mine and had a small waterproof patch/bandage which I left on for about a week. When i took it off it was a little crusty but all good.

I'm sure you will be all healed up in a a few days. You can then show the girls your bullet wound and amazing story of how you got shot.

    Cheers

    Congrats!
Just put a gauze over mine with some tape for 2 days or so. Wound may weeped a little bit but nothing to write home about. Seemed to close on the outside rather quickly. Doc said inside closes in a matter of hours. I refeer to mine as "my bullet hole". Doc calls it my second belly button. Just a reddish depression the size of a pencil eraser now.

Thanks to all for the words of congrats, and wisdom of experience. Truly does help to know what to expect with the healing process. Took the initial bandage off after 30-hours, when I got home from work this PM, and there was a minor amount of blood, but looks okay to the novice me.

Scam, the funny thing about it is- I got lucky. The 9MM slug was fired by a lucky gangster from a little distance, you see, and only had the velocity to get about an inch below the surface of my gut. Of course, I got a tough hide, and that probably helped slow it down. Anyway, I said, "What the heck," then drove home and took the slug out with a pair of needle-nose pliars! And then, hey, I slapped a bandaid on it and got a good night's sleep! I mean, it coulda been worse: there were four gangsters, and they all had guns a-blazin', but I only took one slug, thanks to my evasive moves; and the punks knowing they weren't trying to make a hit on just anybody, so maybe they got a little case of the nerves, you know...How do you think the chicks are gonna like that story?

Ah, yes, Brothers and Sisters- it is good to be alive.

I don't know about you, but one of the worst things about the PEG was that I couldn't sleep on my stomach. Boy, it was good to get rid of that thing.
    Congratulations!

Your story made me laugh. I told one lady that inquired about my neck that I got my wicked scar in a knife fight, you should have seen the chick that lost.

    Peg Removal
Bob had his taken out yesterday. He still cannot eat most foods...I am very upset but he wanted it out. I feel very strongly about this he is loosing weight. He is having Surgery May 17th on his Tognue and they are removing 2 nodules that got bigger since his first PET Scan..why when they are going to cut on his Tognue would they remove it??? I asked him how much he weighs he said 156..I bet he is not a lb over 120 and he is 6 foot tall. Today he ate nothing except 4 eggs at 7:00pm. His spewach is getting worse..he seems wobbly almost to the point that I would think he is drunk. I just do not understand this. I told him I am calling his Dr and he said NO...I really feel strongly that they made a big mistake in taking it out. He has not been honest with the Dr's from the start about pain levels etc.. He rarley let me come to Appt's cause I would speak up. Am I wrong in feeling this way? He has been to a Swallow Dr who said he looks good but he cannot eat most foods...he coughs all the time and the speach is deteriorating very badly. I sure hope the Surgery goes well and we can get over this Nighmare. I am sorry I am venting, but there is something wrong with this picture in my opinion. Why could they not wait until after Surgery?? He is not even attempting to maintain weight.

By what you wrote in your above 5/7 Post- yes, you should talk to the Drs. about what is really going on. Frankly, I cannot comprehend them taking the tube out before surgery on the tongue- if it was the PEG tube located in the lower-abdomen that goes into the stomach. If he is refusing to eat= he is refusing to help himself to fight the good fight. That's bottom-line. And getting the Nutrition needed with a handicapped mouth and throat- that's why PEG feeding tubes exist. You really should talk to your Drs. about his weight-loss and refusal to eat, and the need for a PEG if his mouth condition gets so bad that he can't drink the Ensure without a lotta pain. Really should. He has to get the Nutrition into his body.

Yes it is the Tube in the stomache....he can only eat soup and eggs...it just blows my mind they took it out and I am frankly pissed off. I mad beef stew in the crckopot tonight and it was very liquidy for his sake and he looked at it and said I can't eat that...OMG..I do not know what he said to them, but he should still have it in and canalmost gaurentee they will be putting another one in cause he is loosing weight a month ago he could not eat anything! I agree they should have waited until after surgery. I also am wondering did anyone have issues with consitpation after removal??? I think he may be overmedicating and that may be the cause....he cannot live off eggs and soup...

    PEG Removal
I was glad when I had mine removed. I went to Hospital and they tried 3 times to yank it out but it would not come out. Had to have it removed the same way it went in, no pain that time.Bummer
