Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone out there experiences pain in the rib area. It seems like sometimes after I eat I can feel something poking out and will be sort of sore aroung my rib area.I don't think my ribs were broken during Surgery. At least the Dr didn't tell me they were. But this has just started to happen more and more. I had my Surgery 12/10/09. My entire esophagus was replaced. Any help is appreciated. This sure causes a lot of weird things to happen.

Mary which surgery did you have?
    Hi Mary,
If you had complete open, your ribs would have been moved apart and maybe broken at least one. That is what I have had and still have pain in the area, my surgery was 12/8/10. If you had minimally invasive MIE than someone with that experience would have to help you. Now mine has nothing to do with eating, more with movement and sometimes just for the heck of it. I was told it takes a very long time to completely heal. It probably would not be amiss to mention it to your dr. I still have some oxycodone on hand and take a very minimal amount at night if my ribs or j tube healing area bothers me. Also liquid Tylenol might help if your dr says okay. Hope other than that you are doing okay. Haven't seen you here for awhile. Keep in touch. take care, prayers always,

My Jeff will be 1 year since surgery in July and still has problems with his rib area, he had the open surgery if you want more info please reply Donna and my Jeff had the same kind of surgery.

If its the minimal invasive surgery William Marshall will have to help you.

    Please advise.

    Pain in rib
I had the open Surgery. i have a 12 inch scar up my stomach and on my neck.I was thinking yesterday it might be from where my drain was in on the left side. I also think may be it might be my underwire rubbing that same spot. I sit and type all day. It is just such a crazy feeling. Of course I'm learning this surgery gives you a lot of crazy feelings that no one tells you about.

    pain in ribs
    Donna,
I have been here everyday reading and realize how lucky I am. I may have had to have the full Esophagectomy and am dealing with that and all it's weirdness. But I have not had to deal with the cancer or chemo as it seems most people on this site have. My heart goes out to each and everyone. I just wish there were more like me and are able to get it taken care of before it becomes cancer.

Mary do you have a rib incision?
Jeff and I have the chest incisions, I am not sure if Jeff had his throat cut, I did and we also have a big incision around one side on the ribs. This is what hurts us. When they do that as I said before they spread your ribs and also sometimes break one etc. Also if you had chest tubes that can hurt for awhile too. I am glad you had surgery when you were precancerous if I understand you right. We don't get too many people on this board in that category. Unfortunately, most of us are Stage III or IV once in awhile a Stage II person will appear. You sound like you are working so that can be a strain and even if you did not have a rib incision, they probably moved your ribs around a lot if they did a full esophagectomy. I am glad you don't have to go thru the whole cancer package, it is wonderful to hear although you have gone thru so much with that type of surgery. Ask your dr about what was done and tell him about the pain, he may have suggestions. Glad you come on the board. take care,

    Welcome
    Hi Mary,
Welcome to our csn family! I was a caregiver for my dad who recently passed away 3/9/10. He did not have surgery. He had radiation and chemo for his ec. He beat it. In December 09 he got mets to his liver, this he could not beat. Congratulations on having a successful surgery! I would call the dr. who did your surgery and ask him/her. I was thinking also about maybe it being a hernia? The dr. will be able to answer your questions. Stay in touch.

    YES JEFF HAS 2 INCISIONS
    Donna,

you are so right he has an incision from below his belly button all the way up to his chest, and then another incision from middle of his back to around the rib area, yes they do spread the ribs, and sometimes have to break one or two ribs to get to where they are trying to get too. Jeff was Stage 2 when diagnosed, and had the surgery, I truly think he would do it again, if he had too (i think)

Pain in the shoulder blade area?
    Hi Lori,

It seems like Jeff had the same incisions that I had. You can check out my icon photo if you want. It shows my incisions. Anyway, after surgery did he have discomfort in the shoulder blade area? I don't really have pain there just discomfort. Gets worse as the day progresses and I get tired. Another example would be when reaching for the seatbelt with my left hand I feel a bit of a "pull" around my lower lower right shoulder blade. Nothing I can't handle, just wondering.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    my rib incision
    Dave,
Mine is on the right side and I have a floating rib, when I move my right shoulder I have a sensation in my shoulder blade area that my bones are over riding each other. At first, I had a point sticking out of my back that was really wierd. Boy what a person can adjust to!!! I know someone else with the same incision from lung surgery and she still is having pain in the incision area anytime she moves around too much. I would take some med even OTC and watch straining the shoulder and whole area because that can make it hurt a lot worse. Glad to see you on the board and I am sure you will have much to contribute. take care, prayers always,

    Pain in shoulder area
Yes, and wearing the seat belt didn't help i drove everywhere for the first 30 days and he held the seat belt away from him. at times it still bothers him. so if you don't drive just hold the seat belt away from you and if you get stopped just show the cop why, thats what the doctor told us. ha ha

Yes he had the same incisions you did so i can really relate to you.

If I can help let me know okay

    That's funny Lori!
I did the same thing with the seatbelt when my wife was driving. I was kinda hoping to get pulled over so I could show the cop "my stuff", portacath, j-tube etc.

    Take care,
    Dave
