edited March 2014 in Breast Cancer #1
I was diagnosed with breast cancer on Dec 20,2009. The only people I told was my family and immediate co-workers(i work in a retail pharmacy) My chemo started on March 4,2010 after several surgeries with one cancer cell in my sentinol nobe, none in the axillary node so i was classed 2A breast cancer. Sorry rambling on, I didn't inform my employer of my breast cancer until a week before my chemo started. just didn't want people to know yet. Well after 16 days after 1st chemo my hair fell out so i had my 2 daughters shave my head. I didn't feel myself with a wig on so i donned a cap to work. And got questions like are you cold? i know it is probably my fault that i didn't tell people i have cancer but why would they think i would wear a cap lol anybody else out there face this delima?

thanks for listening

    i did the same thing
Hi. I did the exact same thing about keeping things under my hat (haha, pun). I don't have BC, I have a sarcoma. But I do creep around this discussion board b/c it has far more updates and information on general things than any of the others. I didn't tell very many people either - just family and my supervisor. Then went bald and pretty much floored everybody. Actually found out more people *really* care about me more than I originally thought, and now feel bad about leaving so many friends out of the loop and just letting it hit them like a ton of bricks. Now I wish I'd been more upfront. Alas, what'er ya gonna do? :)
Unless I'm at my own home or at my folks, I keep something on my head. But *no* wigs. Just not me. I have a GREAT website a nurse educator told me about. www.headcovers.com They have some beautiful headscarves and hats designed specifically for women with hair loss. Huge variety, and the priced are reasonable. You might like that.
As far as getting funny looks or comments from people I don't know, let 'em stare, who cares. If they stare or make ugly comments, it's because they're just flat out rude and insensitive. And I don't have much use for unkind people. So, I ignore them.
    Good luck!

    you'd be surprized
You would be surprized about the dumb things people will say to you... I even had one person tell me they loved my "hair cut" and this person was well aware of my circumstance. Just where what makes you feel comfortable, tell people what ever makes you feel good for that moment..

    People will surprise you
People will surprise you with their strange questions and comments, but more so with their caring and concerned questions and comments. I chose a turban or scarf cause a wig just felt like a dead raccoon on my head (and not in a good way). I actually had a woman come into my office after seeing me with a knitted (verrrrry soft) cap for night wear since she'd heard that bald heads get cold at night.

Whatever you do is your choice and is obviously right for you. Will keep you in prayer.

    hair cut
I had someone ask me are my ears cold? I said yes because my hair used to cover them! lol

I didn't mean to make her sad, sometimes my sense of humor only works on my family and my close friends. lol

Anyway I told her I am going to be fine.

    thanks for listening

    Exactly
Your right I have had a lot of caring people come up to me. My close co-workers too say they couldn't see me wearing a wig either. When I get home though and my grandkids are not here I walk around bald! =)

    thanks for listening

    soon-my dilemma too
I will start chemo on Monday -so I did go to try and find a wig-I am waiting to see the one I ordered -I thought for sure I would want to wear one. After trying them on-(what an emotional fun way to spend an evening), I am again not sure of anything. I work in a dental clinic though and not sure(again) what other head covering that looks professional-hoping I can decide soon to order something since I know my time is limited.
Many at work have needed to know I have bc and no one is "brave" enough to ask if I will be losing my hair and I am not offering the info...still difficult to talk about and hoping I will be "okay" to get everyone else "okay" when it happens. So, it shall be interesting in the next few weeks...

Dash, I am a professional in
Dash, I am a professional in an office and I found some "scarves" that are very appropriate for the office setting. Go to the website 4women.com and check these out. There are many, many colors, both solids and patterns, in rayon and silk. These were all I wore to work. I didn't buy a wig, so I didn't feel bad about spending $49 and $59 for these. Good luck.

    Hi scorpio
Sorry you're going through the hairloss phase. It is hard to deal with. I remember back in Oct when I first went to work with my wig on. I could feel everyone looking at me. And I got the haircut comments too. Chemo was done 2 months ago and my hair is starting to grow back very slowly.
