post hysterectomy- fluid build up

Hi There,

I have a question for my mom- she had her hysterectomy/debulking about 2 weeks ago and has a lot of fluid coming out vaginally. She goes through about 3 pads in one hour in the morning but then it tapers off by afternoon. There is light blood but mostly fluid. We got really concerned since she was swelling up so we took her to the emergency room. Doctor said she had a UTI and acute serosangineous vaginal discharge and that if it got worse to come back. Has anyone else had this?

    I had my surgery in Sept. 08 and I honestly don't remember having this problem. Is she being to active? I would try not to panic and listen to the doctor. Keep her walking but no lifting. Good luck.

    Thank you for your reply! Its weird because its a gush of fluid when she stands- i've been reading that it could be fluid draining from her wounds after such an intense surgery- I'm hoping thats what it is and isnt anything more serious. We're trying to schedule an appointment asap just to be sure.

    have it checked
    That is definitely unusual and I would have it checked by the surgeon/oncologist right away. Hopefully it is just post-surgical fluid, but my mother never reported anything like that, and I was her primary caregiver during that time. She would sometimes have urinary incontinence for a day or two after chemo, but reported no other leaks.

    I've found the nurses to be very helpful with these things. Easier to get a call back from them than to get close to seeing a doctor.

    Immediately after my surgery, I did experience the excessive amount of fluids, which terrified me.

    My doctor told me that draining sometimes occurred after this type of surgery and would gradually taper off as time passes and my wounds began healing. I don't remember a "gushing" type of occurrence though.

    It's good that you are having your mom looked after, because one thing I know there is no such thing as a rountine surgery, so it's good you didn't assume anything. I would really like to know how her prognosis turned out, if it is any different of course.

    Thank you for the replies! We spoke to her primary oncologist and she said to have it checked out by our local gyno since our onc is located about 2 hours away. Well, her gyno didnt want to see her since he didnt perform the surgery- wonderful. So we called the onc back and she said that if it doesnt get any better then to come in. Since she wasnt bleeding and didnt have a fever, they figure its the post surgical fluid (seroma maybe). We have our follow up with her onc on Wednesday so hopefully it doesnt get any worse. Its actually already started to taper off.
