I know this post is not really really serious stuff and I apologize.

For Christmas this year hubby gave me two tickets to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. haha my first reaction was lordy-lou what if i don't live that long?? I am truly amazed and excited by this prospect. I have never been to New York so here's my question.

We live in Canada about 4 hours from the US border. We hope to drive into New York state and take a train into the city....don't know where we will stay. Are there train stations where you can leave your car for a few days? I have cea's and cat scan and liver surgeon in April....the tickets are for early May. I am just praying things stay relatively stable so i can actually see the Met.

Thanks for your help...

NY Phil - The Answer Man
    Hi Mags

    Wow - how exciting!

You are going to have a great time there...YOU will be "stable" and be able to take in such a wonderful event in your life. There won't be anything that you can take away from this one - I don't feel anything will creep in in such a short time to deny you this.

I'm a Texas boy, so I know nothing of NY, but I know a "Yankee" who probably does - good ol' Phil can probably point you in the right direction...he knows his city well. Maybe drop him a PM to see what he can tell you.

LOL, Phil :) Only kiddin' - you're a good guy and you know I think the world of you - just taking a "shot." You gig me so much, I thought I would toss one your way.

Mags, get the address of the Met - and then hit the search engine to get a listing of hotels in that area - and you can probably get some info on how close you would be to there. And find out the rates and availability too...that way you can go ahead and book it.

'Cause remember once you book it - it becomes REAL! And then nothing can take it away from you! Certainly not Cancer - you just tell Cancer that IT has to wait :)

I look forward to hearing about this - YOU GO MAGS!!!

    thank you Craig
haha thank you for that advice....hope it is true. If you can't help with NY maybe you can help with a Texas Question. Ever since chemo i find my concentration not so good so I love to look at decorating magazines and dream. My fav is Country Living and they seem to be doing a lot of features on homes in Fredericksburg (SP) Texas. Is this a very trendy town or do you have any idea of what is happening there Craig??

Which crossing will you use to get into US?

If you let us know we may be able to find closest city which would have train service to NYC and parking. These days some hotels are actually offering free parking for transit if you stay with them one night. We will have to see what we can come up with.

In NYC you will need to get a cab from Grand Central to your hotel. Once you determine hotel, it will help to do map search from GC to there just to see about how far you have to go...NYC is a BIG place....lol.

Hope you have a GRAND time...what a wonderful husband you have...putting that trip out there as something wonderful in the future to look forward to.

    From one Canadian to another
    Hi Mags,

Our whole family (4 of us)went to NYC for 5 days the summer of 2008. We had a fantastic time & ~ 5 days was just right. We stayed at a lovely inn, The Inn on 23rd. It is in Chelsea district & everything seemed to be either a walk or short taxi ride away. You can google it & see it online. They have fantastic breakfasts & a very "homey atmosphere". Some days it was hard to leave as it was so lovely at the inn. The suite we had was beautiful. Four of the nights we saw Broadway plays & we usually cabbed over & walked back to our hotel, right through Times Square. I would return in a New York minute for a similar viist. I also love home magazines. When we were in NYC, I was able to shop at several antique/flea markets - fantastic! What a thoughtful, wonderful gift! I hope you have a fantastic time. (I am jealous!) I don't know anything abut parking there, as we flew, but I think you could also take a train.

    Fredericksburg is Happenin' :)
    Hi Mags!

Fredericksburg is a happenin' place these days - It's very pretty and country down there. Some big city amenities in a small town atmosphe - very quaint. It's been awhile since I passed through there. It was not as well known then. Austin, Texas got popular and the surrounding small country towns benefitted from the population growth in the late 90's.

It is located about 70 miles out of Austin, which is the state capitol. Austin and the surrounding region is really popular...and the area has grown. It's just plain comfortable down there as compared to the Dallas/Fort Worth area, where I currently "am not living." Concretes and shopping malls when I'm at - it's all about the Retail. The hustle and bustle of a couple of million people in the area all going for the same thing...like squirrels "after a nut", know what I mean? LOL :)

There are some rivers and countryside down there - big business has not been able to take away it's charm - although I suspect they've got a Walmart, who doesn't, LOL :)

I like the "country living" decor as well - it goes well with a Texan lifestyle, and if it gets bumped or scratched, it just looks all that more authentic :)

I went ahead and got this URL link for you to Fredericksburgh, so you can check it out - it's the official Fredericksburgh website:

    http://www.fbgtx.org/

And in Fredericksburg, we would only be about a 3.5 hour trip away from each other...I think it's about 180 miles between Arlington and Fredericksburgh, maybe even less :)

You'd be loved in Texas - we're friendly people - and everything is BIGGER and BETTER in Texas, Darlin' :)

    See ya!!!

    Hey, Craig.

I was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, so I always notice when they mention "the other one" in magazines. My Fredericksburg is lovely, as well. Lots of history and antiques and good people (some kin to me!)

    my oncologist
didn't want to start new thread so I will just tell this little story here. I just came in the house after Sunday afternoon yoga class at the local YMCA. When I came downstairs there was my oncologist sitting outside the pool area waiting for her little son. We greeted one another and she immediately started to talk about her troubles with the little guy and school and bullies...and on . It made me so proud just to listen to her for half an hour...lol

you know what it is usually like....you are the one freaking out,,,there is never enough time but today I could just listen to her. It made me feel warm to see her very human, mother side. Not expressing this well...hope you will understand...

    Small world isn't it
You expressed yourself very well...nice to see the human side of our health care folks and be treated as a 'real person' instead of a patient.

Only goes to show that everyone out there needs a receptive listener once in a while...and we are so lucky to have all on this board!

    AMTRAK
I did a quick search and saw that there are Amtrak stations in Saratoga NY, Poughkeepsie NY, Rhinecliff NY. Poughkeepsie is about 90 minutes north of NYC. I would think they would have parking but I'm sure you can call and find out. As far as where to stay in the city, I have no idea. I live close enough so I never had to deal with staying over. If you've got the bucks, there are plenty of places to spend it! There are places that are homey and places where you can be homey.
It sounds like it will be a wonderful time. There are so many really great places to eat at. The city keeps getting better and better in my opinion. My brother in law does high end renovations in the city and one place was the top floor of the Time Warner Building at Columbus Circle. Talk about views...

    Good Luck!
    Thanks Craig ;-)
I wish I had a place in the city, it would be "party city" then!

Repeat after me...I am enjoying New York and the Met more than I could have imagined! I attended a seminar yesterday and one of the primary exercises was "I am" statements. Your sub-concious is a powerful tool. Can't wait to hear all the details when you return!

    Hi Mags!
Being born and bred from Long Island, New York, I worked in the city for a couple years at the Empire State Building on Floor 27. When I was younger in my teens and early 20's, my friends and I just always took the Long Island Railroad there, to Penn Station, which brought me right to the Avenue of the Americas, (also known as 6th Avenue) right smack in the middle of Times Square, a few blocks from the Empire State Building, with Macy's across the street! I don't know of trains that carry cars or anything, when it came to going to the city, I wouldn't drive, the traffic is ridiculous! I would cab it, bus it, walk it, but I be darned if I drove. We even walked blocks and blocks to go to FAO Schwartz, Rockefeller Center, or to see concerts at Radio City Music Hall, which I saw Sting and Rod Stewart there.

You will have a blast there, but you may be better not wanting to drive, alot of no left turns, expensive parking, and you may end up lost. Do see a Broadway show, go to Little Italy, my favorite part of the city, for the best Italian Restaurants ever, or Chinatown for the best Chinese Food. Also have a treat at Serendipity's where they are famous for their Frozen Hot Chocolate. My friend met John Travolta, his wife and kids there!

I hope you have alot of fun there in my home state, I sure miss the food, but I don't miss the expensive prices and traffic, and DO have a dirty water dog! Yum!

    Hugsss!

Donna you must miss New York so much. Sounds like you enjoyed yourself there. Ok we made a couple of decisions. We will cross the border at Buffalo and drive down to Saratoga, or Albany or Poughkeepsie. I like the idea of stopping in one of these places and leaving the car a a hotel and Amtraking into to New York. That all sounds good....so now we are started.....thanks again

    ...Like a plan!

Once a New Yorker, Always a New Yorker, wherever you live, I love New York, still have friends and family there, don't want to live there again, I wouldn't mind retiring to a house in the Hamptons though, that's for sure, but NY always has something going on. I loved going to the city in August, when they have the St Gennaro's Feast there in Little Italy, blocks and blocks of foods, drinks and rides!

Make sure you also have a knish with mustard, or a zeppole! I swear, I ask people here in Ohio if they ever had a knish, and they have no clue that that is LOL...I should order those online now, bet I can...

    Ownen Sound to NYC
I'm not sure how far you want to drive vs ride the train, but if your looking to drive most of the way and just take the train into NYC you may want to go to North Jersey just north west of the city. When I go from Trenton to NYC I use New Jersey Transit (google NJT). Clean double decker trains for $12 each way vs $36-55 on Amtrak. You don't even have to live in the states to take advantage of that gov subsidy.

    Not a Problem
How can I forget someone from Owen Sound. My wife still has family around town. I have to get back up to the Bruce soon. The sunsets from Oliphant in August rival Key West. I'm doing well. I had a little platelet delay which at first bothered me, but I later realized I needed the break. I just finished treatment 6 of 12, the half way point. I'm hoping for a summer with very llittle Dr visits. I'm also hoping to hear about your trip.

    Best wishes,

    New York - wow
Mags, have a great time in NY, that is on of the few sates that I have not been too, and would love the opportunity to do so, maybe next year!

I lived in San Antonio Texas for eight years and Lubbock for two, love the State! I had a cabin in Arizona for 8 years and it looked like it stepped right out of Country living Magazine.... those were some great times, long walks....my favorite pass time was picking up tings nature just left for the picking..... I had this sign on our tool shed, it read, BARN GODESS. I love the outdoors and gardening so much. I actually had 17 fruit tress all mature, many beatiful Oak trees and over 100 pines on my 1 acre lot. Geez, I just remembered that I had about 50 oak tress on my lot in San Antonio, the way the oaks branch out is amazing. In Phoenix (Scottsdale), where I lived for 15 years, my home was wrapped in Palo Verde and Mesquite Trees, lots of cacti and bougenvllas (sp?), amazing dry landscape, but breath taking never the less....

Tanks for bringing forth the memories, they are good for the soul!

    Have fun!
