A MOM IN NEED

Hi, My dad's ex-lover (Nena) has been battling breat cancer for over 4 years. She now lives in the Bronx, NY and she is in bad shape. She now has tumors in her lungs and they say there is nothing they can do for her. She has threee daughters (the oldest is my 1/2 sister). They do not speak english. My mom keeps updating me on the story and I feel as if I should do something to help. I am currently battling Leukemia. My mom raised my 1/2 sister so now Nena wants my mom to raise her other two girls. My mom does not have a place of her own. Nena's biggest concern is that she cannot die in peace because her girls will not be properly cared for by their dad (dead beat). We feel she is not getting all the medical or mental support she can have in her state because she does not speak enlish and has not resourcers offered to her. I live in Atlanta and she lives in NY. How can I find her the help she needs in NY. I feel bad. So does my mom. I kinow this is a weird story, but it is all true.

    My goodness~ yours is indeed quite the story, isn't it? With all of its intricacies, it seems that there is an amazing amount of heart and empathy involved.

    I would suggest that Nena or her daughters contact the ACS~ there are multi-lingual agencies which should be able to help her, or at the very least steer her in the right direction.
    It is indeed frightening to have cancer when we are surrounded by people and medical professionals who DO speak our language; I cannot imagine how alone Nena must feel not having a medical team to communicate with.

    Perhaps the kind sisters here on the boards will have other and better advice than I do..this is not a circumstance I have ever come across.

    I hope that you are getting the treatment YOU need to win your battle against Leukemia; these boards can also be a great support for you as well!

    I wish all of you strength courage,and Success in finding a workable solution to the delimma you are in regarding Nena and the children involved.

    Thanks! I contacted ACS yesterday and they emailed me asking me for soem info in order to help Nena. I called my 1/2 sister for the info only to find out Nena is back in the hospital after Chemo, with Pneumonia and since no one speaks english in her family, they aren't gettign answers. I am getting frustrated because no one know her doctor's, or social worker's name. ACS has given the option for my sister to call but it seems as if they won't get much out of her. She barely knows what the doctor's are doing or saying. How can I get consent to speak to her case worker or her doctor if Nena is asleep all the time on Morphine? She is at NY Presbeterian Hospital-Millstein building. Anyone have any suggestions?

    This lady might be able to assist in helping to find Nena some help, perhaps one of her daughters can play translator between the 2 to of them.
    Linda Bily at Stony Brook Hospital on long Island, a grant reviewer for cancer funding, a hotline counselor of breast cancer patients at Breast Cancer Network of Strength, formely Y-Me and the Chairperson of GIFT (giving Inspiration, Fighting Together) Gift is a volunteer-run organization dedicated to making the journey through cancer easier for all patints.

    I would go there if I could afford it. My mom is going to try and call Nena's cell and see who answers it in her hospital room. Somehow, I need to get consent to speak to her case worker and/or doctor.

    I'm sorry I have no suggestions to offer but just want to you to know I'm thinking of all involved in this circumstance.

    "Nena's biggest concern is that she cannot die in peace" - this statement continues to haunt me - I will continue to pray for her peace, calm and comfort.
