Hi everyone! I am on Taxetere and Cytoxin. Four treatments three weeks apart. Today at 11 is my second treatment. No sleep all night, probably a combo of the steroid and anxiety. I did make some nice necklace sets anyway!
After reading all the posts regarding this treatment, I decided to shave my head on day 12, thinking it would fall out sometime around day 14. It was itching alot and really bothering me so I thought for sure it was time to come out...Well it didn't! Here it is day 21 and its all still in place with no sign of going anywhere. Now I wish it would just happen already!
Oh well, here I go again. I don't have a port and I am regretting it. After having the Brachy catheter for just 5 days I was not ready to have anything inserted into me for almost 4 months. But the IV slipped last time and had to be moved. It was painful so had to be moved yet again. My wrist still hurts and I am dreading going through the whole ordeal again.
Bad decision on my part, hope this does not happen to anyone else.

    Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow~ maybe!!
Generally, hair comes out beginning with your 2nd treatment...the chemo effects accumulate in your system, and ta-da~~ hair loss is one of those effects. Congrats to you for biting the bullet and shaving your head before it was quite necessary. BTW, I was shocked when my Dr did not inform me ( and I was so rattled I never thought of it myself) that hair loss means ANYWHERE you have hair...it was a shock to have less than a newborn baby does all over my body! Eyebrows, eyelashes, nosehairs, pits, legs, and "other parts" as well. Saves on shampoo and shave creme, that's for sure! It is odd to find out how important eyelashes are~ my eyes watered like crazy for months, and ewwww...just about anything flying through the air found its way in my nose! The rest was a combination of cool and strange! :-)

So sorry about your not having a port~ it was such a blessing to have one. Hopefully you will fare MUCH better this time around. (((((HUGS)))) to you!!

I am also on cytoxan and
I am also on cytoxan and taxotere and just had my second treatment last Monday. My hair started coming out on day 16 and took around a week for most of it to come out. So by the time I went for my second treatment, it was getting pretty thin but I did have a little left. Now it is about completely gone. I also did not have a port. My onc had told me that each time a port goes in there is a chance of infection or some problem so for only six treatments he thought I would be better to just have an IV. What I've found already is that a lot depends on who is putting in the IV. With my first treatment, the nurse just jammed it in at once and it really hurt. It burned for about the first half hour as meds were going in. Someone else did it the second time and she pushed it in gradually and it didn't hurt at all. I have her name and I hope to get her again!

For your chemo #2 today. You did not shave your head in vain, for sure. And, so sorry for the catheter complications. I'll be hoping things go better for you.

    chemo
elm, good luck on your second! My hair did not fall out til after the second treatment too, more than 21 days. But fall out it did, so you are just a little ahead of the game with shaving it, less traumatic when it does start falling out.

My onc refused to infuse me again after the second treatment if I did not have a port or picc, since the port never worked, they did a picc, port is preferable. I have a spot in my wrist from the chemo leaking out of the vein, and it will probably never go away, but at least it hit a spot where there wasn't any muscle, because it can eat away the muscle too.

Let us know how it went!

    Getting a port after all
It went well except for having problems with the IV again. It was put in my hand and it moved so it was placed in in my arm instead and that was painless. The hand is swollen and bruised again. I put an ice pack on for an hour when I got home. I will have a port for my next 2 treatments and they want to install it as close to the next treatment as possible instead of right away. I am real tired but I did not sleep last night. Feet ache already from the Taxotere. Also felt nausea a couple hours ago. Tomorrow neulasta shot. Yippee!
Thank you everyone for your concern and thoughts you are truly a life line for me!

    Hi Elm
I hope that the SEs from treatment number 2 are fading for you. I start the same treatment on Friday? Any words of wisdom? I'm really stressing about Friday.

    Port
I had the port inserted on Monday and had my first chemo on Friday. I didn't like the idea of the port in because it felt and looked a bit strange, but am glad now I had it. I had taxotere and carboplaten and she gave me anti nausea drip before the chemo and then the pills for the next three days. Worked wonders. The only time I got nauseous and threw up was after the last chemo. I think it was a combination of fear of it being over, glad it was over, and fear of rads to come. I hope too you are sleeping now, rest is the best medicine. Let us know when you get the port. I had it done under twilight sleep and felt nothing.

All I can say is try not to get too stressed! Easy to say, I know. I think fear of the unknown is the worst, right up there with waiting...water is your best friend! Take your Claritin and Aleve for the bone pain from the Neulasta, if you are getting it. Best of luck to you!
