I wasn't nauseated much at all no did i vomit. They gave me so many anti-nausea meds i.v. and pills. I did have diarrhea though and took immodium fo that. I will be thinking of you thursday and wishing you the best of luck. Keep posting your questions. I had so many useful tips from our sisters here.

My experience was much like Jackie's. I was not nauseated at all. They gave me meds and I took them to try & prevent nausea...apparently it worked.
They also gave me anti-nausea meds IV right before the A/C. As my onc told me...this will at least keep you from puking in my office...lol! His sense of humor is endearing!
I went from running to the bathroom, to constipated, to running to the bathroom again. There were days that I didn't venture far from home!
But it was all tolerable.

good luck on Thursday, I know you will do fine. they have plenty of anti-nausea meds, so if you feel anything, tell them and they will give you something else.
I felt just a little queasy, but never enough to puke, I don't do that either if I can help it. I only puked after surgery, never for chemo. Let us know how it goes.

I haven't been on the board for awhile, but I had to comment on your upcoming A/C (but not upchucking,LOL).
I took the A/C for 4 rounds last year and then 4 rounds of Taxol. The Emend probably was the best of everything they gave me. I felt some nausea, but not enough to really barf, after the first infusion only. Then, it was more a case of "sour stomach" every so often. A friend had advised me to eat a lot of protein when I felt this way. Although it sounded like the LAST thing I'd want, I kept some deli sliced turkey around. And surprisingly, it really helped! I'd wake up at 2 in the morning feeling quesy, sneak quietly into the kitchen and grab some turkey---and it really helped. My friend liked ham more, so she snacked on that. Needless to say, I don't have much of a yen for deli turkey now because of the connection---but at least it wasn't chocolate that I could no longer look at ;>)
You need to take a deep breath and remember that every infusion will make you just that much closer to finishing this part of the "trip".
I've always thought of the removal of my port as a great milestone! Oh, yeah----I didn't use any cream on the port to numb it, and aside from the stick at first, it didn't hurt at all. But, if they're offering you something to use---take it---why not have one less thing to think about?
You'll do great! Just picture all that chemo chasing away any stray CA cells to get you very healthy!

no puking no pooping
My experience was very similar to everyone else's. I did not take Emend for the simple reason it was not yet available! I took Zofran (my little yellow expensive friend). I felt queasy but never did throw up. I was horribly constipated which didn't seem to bother my onc too awful much. He said "Soon your troubles will all be BEHIND YOU!" What a funny guy.....
I usually got my chemo on Thursdays. I felt fine that day, Friday and most of Saturday. By Saturday night I was too queasy and tired to do much but lay around and watch a movie. Sunday and Monday was more laying around and not eating too much (although ice cream tasted good, strangely). I felt good enough to eat a regular dinner Tuesday night. It was alot like my morning sickness, come to think of it. Not actually sick enough to keep you from doing anything but sick enough to keep you from WANTING to do anything.
I was so scared that I literally thought I would begin puking as the A/C entered my veins. Adriamycin is red and as I watched it moved up the IV, I readied myself for a geyser of vomit. I wondered why the nurses weren't waiting with buckets! Other than a bit of fuzziness from the Ativan (which my husband used to his advantage during our game of Trivial Pursuit), I felt fine.
Soon you will be a veteran like the rest of us, able to offer advice and comfort to the new, scared girls. Blessings to you and your family!

Sherry, I am on my #3 treatment of Adriamycin/cytoxan and can say that my first treatment went very easy. The second hit me a little harder. I didn't have any vomiting at all, just a little queezy. I am constipated though. So I have to take a laxative for that. I had a treatment yesterday and I know by the third day I will be very tired and sleep alot. I do have a metalic taste in my mouth so food doesn't taste that great. I also get palpitations, but the doc does a EKG before treatments to make sure my heart is OK. The nulasta shot makes me achy but I take Tylenol for that. I hope this is a help to you, but everyone is different. So Good Luck to you and keep positive and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Your one step closer to being cured!! Diane0 -

The AC treatments are certainly doable, but with all chemo, you will need to follow instructions from your oncologist, and go into this with an open mind. The chemo is there to help you get better, although it will make you feel tired and lethargic for a few days following tx. During my treatment, I was given TAC (Adramycin, Cytoxin, and Taxotere), and joined a clinical study to try to eliminate the Adramycin in the future. I found that the Adramycin was the hardest drug to take, as my treatment center told me it had to be administered by the technician with a syringe (not through the drip bag), and that I should either have ice or popsicles in my mouth while they administered the drug. It does have a tendancy to cause mouth sores, but the ice really helped. As far as nausea was concerned, I took Emend the morning of treatment, and for two days following. Still had some breakthrough nausea for a couple of days after that, but this was taken care of by pills. Just stay away from Reglan for nausea, as this can cause some major neurological problems (the FDA issued a black label warning for Reglan back in January of this year, and warn that sometimes treatment centers use Reglan in your IV before starting chemo. Make sure your center doesn't use this drug, and also that your doctor doesn't prescribe this in pill form.) I hope your treatment goes well, and that you are through treatment before you know it. Emend works wonders. I have Zofran and Compazine left over from the A/C treatments. I used the Z and/or C for breakthrough nausea. They did the trick. It's a little weird watching them push the Adriamycin, but it's not bad.
Listen to your body for what you want to eat. You'll want things you didn't expect. Mine was steak. Go figure, hamburger wouldn't do. Have plenty of mashed potatoes and mac and cheese on hand; really, anything bland until you get used to what you can eat. The metalic taste makes food odd.
Biotene is great mouthwash and toothpaste for if/when you have mouth sores. Not everyone gets them.
The Neulasta shots are rough, so don't be surprised about side effects. Mine was mostly body aches.
Good luck and try to relax, though I know it's tough to figure out how. My prayers are with you.

For your first chemo tomorrow. The meds should help with nausea/vomiting. If not - do NOT delay, and contact your chemo nurse/doctor immediately. There are many different anti-nausea meds available. If one doesn't quite do the trick, another certainly will.

Good Luck tomorrow. I did get sick, threw up the first time but was taking Zofran. The next time they gave me Zofran and Emend, whichI know you have. I had naseau but no vomitting. I actually got very constipated from the Zofran so they told me to take Milk of Magnesia.
I was told to call with any problems so they could make me as comfortable as possible.

Just wanted to add my well wishes for you for tomorrow. I'm sure you will be nervous until you get back home. I know I would be shaking at the knees (OK, the whole body!). I am going through some kind of IV infusion once a month and that has me cringing!! I will be doing this for 3 years besides everything else. But if you can make it through this, then I should feel like mine ought to be a walk in the park. I'll be with you in spirit! But most importantly God will be with you holding your hand!!

Good luck on your chemo tomorrow. I was a basket case on my first infusion. It is the unknown that is so scary. I brought a bag with me stuffed with a teddy bear my friends daughter gave me, a rosary, kleenex, water, hard candies to suck on and a picture of my family. I was so scared I cried before I even sat in the chair. The picture of my family really helped me because when I looked at it I realized that I needed to be strong and LIVE. That I needed to be strong for them to help them acheive their dreams and be there to see them thru all the trials in life. I had a horrible time on AC( I did not get Emmed only zofran and ativan)
but I survived it. Be sure to take your meds before you feel queasy (something I failed to do) and try to keep something in your stomach, I found that I didn't barf quite as much if I just had something in my stomach. Popsicles are great and I found that when I was really able to eat I liked Arby's plain roast beef sandwiches. I did not have any pain with the Nulasta shot. Everyone reacts different to chemo, I hope and pray that you will sail through it without any side effects. Love Surf0 -
