Tuesday's Update

I took Mom to the ER this morning. Her duval drain had started leaking all over her Saturday. We figured it had just found a pocket and was draining like it was supposed to, but there were holes we could see in the tubing above her skin, so it was just going everywhere instead of into the pouch. We tried covering the holes, with no luck. We noticed last night that the skin around her duval and the jp drain was infected due to all the drainage. She has also been bleeding out of the bottom part of her incision (she was sent home like this). This caused her incision to open up more, and she wound up with a huge clot sitting in the incision. We just weren't happy with it all and decided not to wait until tomorrow's follow up. The doctor at the local ER pulled the clot out (per her surgeon's instructions) and cleaned up around the drains. We found out that her incision had re-opened all the way down into the abdominal cavity. She had a clot the size of the doctor's fist, plus some, in the incision. She was transported back to the original hospital late this afternoon/early evening. She was supposed to go back into surgery tonight. I'll be going up to the hospital tomorrow morning, and will update when I learn more.

    So sorry
Oh dear. This happened with my Mom, too, and they ended up leaving the incision open and letting it granulate in. This required packing the wound twice daily with sterile gauze, but she did well for that part. I'll be praying.

    Hugs,

I will continue to think of and pray for Mary. Please let your mom know this- that many people here care for her. Also, Im thinking of you and how weary you must be with all this going on with your mother. Take care of yourself, too-

    Update
I'm thinking I should come up with more interesting subject names :)

Mom is still in the hospital. She didn't go into surgery until Wednesday. They put a new drain in on Tuesday, and took out 2 Wednesday and replaced with 2 more. They found another pocket of infection. So she still has 3 drains in in various places. They re-opened some of the lower part of her incision and widened it. They are going to allow it to granulate on its own. It was being packed 3 times a day, but yesterday they put a wound vac in. She plans on going to a rehabilitation center when they release her from the hospital because we no longer feel competent handling the incision issues at home (since she keeps having to go back with massive infections).
