once a month I get zometa
once a month I get zometa which is for the bones and my cancer has spread to my bones. It is helping with making me feel stronger.

just reading all of these posts! I take Boniva for my bone loss-wouldn't it be awesome if it helped lower my chance of a recurrence!!
From what I've heard you guys talk about,is it possibly going to help with bc or just mets bone cancer?

My family doctor says that I should just take 1200 milg. of calicum a day and 600 of Vitamin D.

I am in the clinical trial you talk about. I believe there are three arms of the study, where you get three different drugs they are comparing to each other. I'm in the Zometa arm: I got Zometa intravenously once a month and now am down to getting it every 3 months. The study will go on for 3 years.

I would urge everyone who can to do this because these drugs (particularly Zometa) have gotten a lot of publicity for preventing recurrence. I have no side effects that I can discern.

Zometa trial
I will ask my onc dr about this trial. I am taking a weekly, plus Vit D, and Calcium. I keep forgetting to take the weekly until after I have eaten. I really need to get with the program, but the problem is that I need to take it on an empty stomach and then not lie down, eat or drink for 30 min afterwards. My stomach gets upset when I take it-darn these drugs.

Isn't Boniva only given to
Isn't Boniva only given to women that have ostiperosis? ( spelling, sorry ) Unless you are in a clinical trial? I didn't know they would just give it to anyone. But, it would be worth asking for, I think.

I have never been asked to participate in anything. Should I feel good about this? I don't know what the criteria would be to get into one.

When Biphosphanate Trial is Started
Sorry, Kat, I don't know what you mean by the "Altto" study. As far as the biphosphanate study, part of it is to determine at what point it is best to start taking the drugs. I was asked to participate, but my liver enzymes were just off the requirements.

Nothing to concern my onc, but the study has a precise range that your counts must fall into. Enzymes reflect inflammation, which my onc. said would be expected with chemo and just after. So I am planning not to worry about that one. Would have liked the Zometa, and may start after chemo, on my own dime (ok, Joe's too). So, none of you already on Zometa have had any troubling side effects?

As far as not being asked to be in a study, Cat, that's not necessarily a desirable thing, being asked to be in a study. For example, I was eligible to participate in a trial for women at high risk of recurrence. Wish I did not qualify for THAT trial!

The first one I was going to do,but my chemo doctor decided it wouldn't benefit me-the second one had to do with anti-nausea drugs,and my chemo nurse didn't think that would be a good idea as I had my first chemo treatment on a Friday and wouldn't be able to get quick help if I got sick!
You can find lists of different clinical trials on certain cancer websites like the Susan G Komen one,and a few other of the reputable ones. They usually have the criteria and qualifications on each one of the trials.
It's definately not cause you're any less special-that's for sure! I wouldn't feel bad about it. Either maybe your situation didn't meet the qualification,or your oncs didn't know about it-who knows!!
I felt bad about not being able to participate-I was willing to "and still am" to do anything I can to help someone else out!

I was feeling like there was something wrong, but then I remembered they did ask me to do something about an anti-nausea trial, but it would entail boing to be checked twice a day and doing some weird kind of monitoring process that I felt I couldn't do and still be at work all day.

Cat, you are special! In a better world, none of us would "qualify" for any cancer trials. That's a qualification we could do without.
