colon resection

i have a question, The first time around when I had surgery the Dr. cut me about 9 or 10 inches to perform my operation. Now that I have to have surgery again I was woundering if they will have to do it that way again or will they do it lyproscopy. Really scared to do it the same way as the first time

    well...
    do they have to do extensive surgery or is it just one little spot. If it's a little spot, they COULD take that out laproscopically but if it's more extensive then I would think they'd have to do a rather major surgery. From the little you posted it looks like you may need another operation. Are there many tumors? Same spot?
    I'm not a fan of surgery either, I've had 5 of them but you have to do what you have to do.

    Double scars
    Hi Kapper,

    My mom has had colon cancer twice - two HNPCC primary cancers 11 years apart. The first surgery was a traditional right hemicolectomy where she received the full zipper scar. The second surgery they resected her transverse colon and they gave her a second traditional hemicolectomy with the full zipper scar. They followed the same line as the first surgery, but about a half inch to the other side of her belly button. So she now has two scars that are side-by-side from mid-abdomen to below the belly button.

    I was lucky. When I had my right hemicolectomy I had a surgeon who did hand assisted laparoscopy, so my scar is only about four inches. My surgeon also glued me back together and used tape to close me up in lieu of sutures so now my scar is hardly even visable. Not all surgeons will perform hand assisted laparoscopy surgery for colon surgery, so you need to ask if or will they do it.

    I think Phil might be onto something...I suppose it depends on exactly what the purpose and goal of your surgery is that would determine if your surgery is an open surgery or a laparoscopy surgery.

    Not sure if this helps but I had a colon resection in March done laproscopic I was lucky in that my surgon specialized in that type of surgery. He removed 36cm of my colon which had two large tumors.
    I have only one major scar about 4 inches long on my lower right stomach.
    I was out of the hospital 3 days after surgery.
