good news

Well, the oncologist that I consulted with at UCSD concurred with my regular oncologist that he would also do a PET scan to determine if the lung nodules that are remaining in my lungs are metabolically active or not, before deciding on the "what next".

I was amazed at how fast things went- the order for the PET was just put in by my regular oncologist Friday- insurance approved it right away and the PET scheduling dept called me on Wednesday telling me they had an opening for me to come the very next morning (which was yesterday). So, I had the PET done yesterday morning. The technician told me I'd have results to my Dr. in 2-3 business days. Well, not being someone who likes to wait (that would have been Monday or Tuesday. First thing this morning (Friday a.m.), I called the radiology film lab to see if "by chance" my results were already there (experience has told me they usually send them over that same or next day, even though they tell the patients otherwise). Lo and behold, I was told the report and scan was in. I requested a copy & was told I could come and pick it up within the hour.

Good news... "no evidence for metabolically active malignancy"!
Funny thing- as I was driving out of the hospital parking lot, I happened to see my oncologist walking up towards the hospital. I called out "hello" to him. He looked friendly and asked "what brings you here?" I told him that I just got my PET results from the film lab. He looked surprised and said he hadn't even seen my results yet- so I told him what the results were and that I'd see him for my appt. on Monday, which I had just made. I wonder how often it happens that a doctor is told the results by the patient! I don't know if that threw him off or annoyed him that I got the results before he did (he didn't act like it), but if he was annoyed, I'm not worried- I've got my results and don't have to wait all weekend!!
We had discussed before that if nothing shows up on the PET as metabolically active, then I'll get to go to the maintenance treatment mode. Most likely will be a combo of Avastin and Xeloda. I can handle that!!

Well, I know I will now enjoy my weekend! Take care, everyone, and I am still thinking about and praying for all your needs and concerns!

    Happy Weekend, Indeed!
    Hi Lisa,

What great news and congratulations for being so proactive in acquiring your results. A similar situation happened to me a couple of weeks ago. My oncologist ordered a STAT CT scan for me while he was on vacation. I knew it would be at least a week before I would hear the results from him, so I went to the radiologist center and had a copy printed out for me. Of course, when my oncologist's nurse called me with the NED report, I acted as though I was learning about it for the first time. They just don't realize how important it is that we know our results as soon as possible.

Again, I am thrilled that your results were so good, and I hope your maintenance treatment will be easy.

    Hugs,

    Kay

Lisa, you are living my DREAM! I am incredibly happy for you! Congrats and spend the weekend celebrating! That is exactly why I get my results immediately and don't wait for the doctors appt - I am just not that patient.

Do you think he'll use the N word? Ned is such a dear friend...

    Congrats and good luck,

    Congrats!!!
Hey Lisa... that sounds like fabulous news to start your weekend off ... and then you will be so relaxed when you go in to see your oncologist because you already know the results and can formulate your questions over the weekend :) Thank the wonderful lab for not only having the scans done and seen by the radiologist so that his/her report was done and you could pick up your results early. I will definitely be intrigued as to what the next plan will be for your ongoing treatment and what your oncologist feels the ongoing prognosis will be.

    You go, girl!

    Great news Lisa
Thanks for sharing and I love the part about getting your results before your doc did!!

A few years ago I had to wait 6 days to find out my results and I think that was probably the only the second time I've gotten really irritated at my oncologist and actually told him that if I had a recurrance I was going to blame it on him for the added stress HE put me through for making me wait so long. Since then I have never had to wait more than a day, unless it is my choice. He evens calls me the day after appts if some of the tests aren't in yet. It did take me awhile to "train" him that he worked for me, not the other way around.

Keep up the good work and have a great relaxed weekend!!

I don't know if he'll use the N (NED) word or not, since there are actually still nodules there, even though they don't light up. I know I need to be on the maintenance. Last time I was told I was NED, I really wasn't & then they grew back again. I will not let that happen again! I will be proactively "keeping it at bay"!

I will enjoy the weekend- thanks! I'm definitely thinking of you, though, as I know you're getting ready to head to Houston for the liver surgery. I'll be praying for all to go smoothly, including the part of getting ready to leave home, getting there, checking in, the prep, the actual surgery of course, and the recovery. You take care & check in as soon as you're able to.

    God bless,

    FANTSATIC NEWS!
Congratulations on your wonderful news, Lisa!

Funny you should mention about patients informing their doctors of results - can't say that I've ever been in that position, but I will say that finding an oncologist who is conversant on the HNPCC condition that Katie and I both have seems to be so difficult that we've actually downloaded a fact sheet (sort of a "Lynch Syndrome for Dummies") to help educate prospective doctors. Maybe it's just because we're on a CRC forum with a great bunch of informed patients and HNPCC is a common topic, or maybe it's just that the oncologists in Charleston were sick the day they taught HNPCC at medical school, but I am consistently amazed at how often Katie and I have to explain to them what HNPCC is and the standard surveillance protocol. Talk about taking an active role in your own healthcare.

Anyway, didn't mean to get off on a tangent - WOO-HOO for YOU!
