As some of you may have read ... my hair came out in clumps Saturday and I had a friend shave what was left. It honestly doesn't bother me. I think I can handle almost any side effect from the chemo ... as long as there is NO nausea.

Anyway ... a few weeks ago I ordered a "Moopy Hat" (she looks much cuter in it than I do) ... so I was prepared. But I see all of these beautiful scarves and wish I knew how to tie them. I know there are instructions/videos etc. but I do wonder if it makes a difference whether you have a cotton scarf or silk ... or whatever. Are there any scarf "secrets" out there that anyone could share? (I tried tying one of my old silk scarves and almost strangled myself ... so I'm sure there MUST be an easier way ... or ... I'll have to admit that I am totally uncoordinated!)

    With some of the longer scarves i use a scrunchi to tie it at the end. i supposed you could use one on shorter ones also. I have a few caps and hats too. I don't quite pull it off quite like the Moopster does but am comfortable in them. I only wear the wig when i have to or am going to work.

    Great idea with the scrunchi. I hadn't thought of that ... but it sure sounds easier than strangling myself trying to tie behind my back or at the side.

    And have I lost my mind (probably!) ... but didn't Moopy have a picture on the boards with her wearing a cute little denim thing? Or did I make that up? That's what I got ... and it's great.

    I wear a cotton hankerchief at home, but I've also been wanting beautiful silk scarves for the spring/summer. The winter hat that I wear to the grocery store isn't going to cut it when the temperatures finally warm up -- and I hate wearing my wig all the time. Maybe someone could post pictures of a properly worn scarf?

    Thank you for the compliment on my hat! But I am sure you are as cute as can be. It is so funny that you asked today about scarves--just this morning I got myself all entangled in a scarf my sister convinced me to buy. I was planning to take it back to Target. (Tasha, I think, has mentioned getting scarves at Claires', and also one of our sisters mentioned getting pretty ones at Dollar Stores.)

    Anyway, I had just thought I would ask for help when I saw your post. It is getting warmer here in the Ozarks (at least off and on), and I figure scarves and handkerchiefs will be cooler, if I can figure out how to fold and wrap the things. Someone did suggest using a scunci to tie the scarf,which I thought was an excellent idea (sorry I forgot who suggested it, but thanks, sister).

    So, sisters, any help y'all can give me and Teena? Although I have to warn that I probably need step by step instructions (think of me as a 4-year-old).

    There are a couple of places that can help you
    If you call the American Cancer Society number, they can put you in touch with someone in your area that has been thru it and they can help you, at least talk you thru how to tie your scarves. The cancer support group in your area can help you too if you go to the meetings. And, in my area, there are a few stores for women with cancer, bras etc. They also sell scarves and help you to tie them in different ways. You might check those out.

    Keeping the Compliment Anyway
    Joe normally uses a photo of us, with me wearing a brim hat. I think that is what they are called, with a rolled-up brim. Is that the type of hat you have? He removed the photo temporarily and is using a turquoise Clydesdale in honor of Tasha/Julia (different thread; those 2 would be a hoot together).

    But it might have been someone else's photo, too. Still, you know, I think I will keep the compliment, even if you just imagined that I looked cute! And you can always post your photo in the famous hat.....

    Thank you for the note because I really was beginning to think I'd imagined you in that denim hat with the little brim. But ... I didn't make it up ... and it was your cute little face under that hat. Well ... that's the hat I bought (tlc catalog ... huh?) ... but there's no way I'll look as cute as you in it. :-)

    I need some baseball hats like yours, too. Those would be good for the summer. But are they secure? I wouldn't want a strong wind to blow it away.

    I knew I couldn't tie the scarves either so I bought cotton caps. They weren't hats.

    I just added a picture to my expressions page. If you want to see the cap I'm talking about. This one was a little large and kept falling down my face. You can't say I've got a big head!

    OK Back to the Mr Kleen Disguise kits: Mum sent me a thick ethnic scarf from england and I wore it for about a week, the problem was that I looked like a cross between the Ayatollah and Colonel Ghadaffi... found myself being scared half to death by the Canadian SAS lurking about in bushes and leaping out at me from between parked cars (Yeah, Thanks Mum) I guess she thought I needed a distraction LOL. Then she sent me a lovely fine TURQUOISE one with silver threads, that worked, I used a brooch to tie it, round the front then turned it round as I couldn't reach backwards. Hope this helps.     Thanks, Mimi! Under baseball caps I wear a close-fitting beanie-type cover, not knit but cotton or other thin material, something more like you would use as a sleep cap during hot weather. I got the idea from a woman wearing a baseball hat at the chemo center. Underneath she wore a coordinating beanie. She looked so sporty that I gave it a try.

    The close-fitting beanie helps keep the baseball cap secure and also covers your scalp completely. Haven't worn the hat in really windy conditions, though. Maybe I will experiment today: it is expected to be very windy later. If so, I will report back to you.

    Head covers
    I orderedsome very comfy things from HEADCOVERS.COM they are jersey cotton and very comfortable. I have washed them by hand several times. They are holing up fine. they come in many colors. Nancy

    i have seen you both with hair and without. you could both be poster pinups for bald is beautifull!!! your so beautiful inside and out.

    just wondering could we use a hat pin or boby-pins to secure the hat to the close fitting beanie?

    Pins are an excellent idea. I think you can get them in different colors, right? so they won't necessarily show. Or, we can just tuck them in where they can't be seen.

    I like the baseball caps because they make you look like you have energy,even if you don't. But I am going to try the scarfs with a scrunci (is it scunci?) like you suggest.

    I was hopeless at tying scarves too. I found a scarf maker...she is a bc survivor, who makes beautiful scarves at very reasonable prices. The best part is that they have ties in the back, and elastic around the head. You just put it on the first time, tie it and go. You don't have to untie it and tie it again...just slide it on your head and you're all set.
    I stocked up on her scarves when I started chemo and have gotten many compliments on them.

    Hi girls, I also wore scarves when going bald, and mine was during the summer. Just wanted to advise you that silk scarves tend to be slippery little rascals, so you may want to go with cotton scarves instead. They also tend to make your head hotter. I really found that wearing baseball caps worked the best for me. And when I did have to go all out and get dressed up then I wore my wig. Hugs, Lili
