How To Dance In The Rain

> It was a busy morning, about 8:30 , when an elderly gentleman in his 80's, arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.

> I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him.
> I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.
>
> On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
>
> While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment th is morning, as he was in such> a hurry. The
> gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.
>
> I inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.
>
> I was surprised, and asked him, "And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?"
>
> He smiled as he patted my hand and said, "She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is."
>
> I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, "That is the kind of love I want in my life."
>
True love is neither physical, nor romantic.
True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

> The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.
>
> I hope you share this with someone you care about. I just did.
>
> "Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain ."

This was sent to me by a friend, I just had to share....

Hugs, Kathi

    Kathi,
What a beautiful message and I pray everyone finds someone to help them dance in the Rain. All my caregivers are helping me and I pray I can help others. Thanks so very much for this story. Angela
  • That is a beautiful story. Of course, I want to have that kind of love in my life. And it seems a good question to ask myself...do I want someone to give me that love. Or do I need to give it to someone else. He gave it to someone else, he was happy. His wife could no longer give it to him.
Thanks for giving me something to think about, and to inspire me.
    love,
    Joyce

I loved it, what a great story! Thank you Kathi!

Joyce, some philosophies state that we are always running into ourselves and what we give to others we are really giving to ourselves. I guess that's related to "what goes around comes around" and "as within, so without". Cool stuff.
Yes, lets learn to dance in the rain and laugh at the storms!

Wow. Love that quote about giving to others..to ourselves. And so, as we give to ourselves, we give to others too. When each of us has fought for ourselves, we have fought for others. How true on this discussion page. And when we love ourselves, ditto.
It is not that C teaches us a dang thing, I think. It is more like C reduces us to our inner core. And from there, we begin to learn. I have been aware that when I finish up with this beast I will not be the same person I was. So I have talked of reinventing myself. I am starting a list of things the new Joyce will believe and do. I am going to add your quote to my new outlook. Oh, yeah... I get it. Like a phoenix rising!
    Thanks and respect,
    Joyce

Wow, what a powerful story. My father in-law passed last year to Alzheimer's. It is true he no longer knew who we were, but we knew who he was. Thank you for the reminder of how true love is often selfless love. Hugs to you.

I, too, have a quote I'd like to share with all of you. It's by Maya Angelou. "I can be changed by what happens to me. (But) I refuse to be reduced by it." That sums up my feelings perfectly. Hugs, Marilynn
