well mom has been home from hospital since a few days before Xmas, she mainly just lies in her bed, and gets up for washroom only, she is drinking water with electrolytes in it and they gave her antibiotics to take twice a day and potassium pills twice a day, she also has a patch on for pain and takes pain break through once or twice aday, she is getting really thin, she only eats soups and porridge , not a whole lot. She is trying really hard to fight this battle, mentally she seems fine but physically she looks weak to me, any suggestions on what to give her? I give her some protein powder in her drinks once a day, I even give her some pro-biotics (due to the anti-biotics).They also give her a water pill that she take every morning, because she had alot of swollon in her legs and feet, the legs are not swell anymore and her feet are very little, I am wondering should she continue the water pill???
I am so tired trying to think on what I should do for her? I cant seem to find a answer...

Hi Wanda. Please definately check with your mom's doc on the continuation or discontinuation of the water pill. Dehydration can be a big factor on how she is feeling and looking physically. You are doing all you can and your mom is lucky to have a daughter like you to be her advocate. Be sure you take a little time for yourself to take a mental and physical break . Caregivers need to do that. You need to keep your health and spirits up in order to help your mom. If you haven't done so already, consult with the hospital's nutritionist on other foods your mom might be able to tolerate. God Bless, keep us posted and keeping you both in my prayers.

    Hi Wanda,

I agree with Diane above. Everyone tolerates food/drinks differently. I lived on Spaghetti O's, glazed donuts, cheetos, and mac-n-cheese. Your mother is very lucky to have you for a daughter. I hope you find the answers soon.

    Hi Wanda,

Hang in there. Your mother is very lucky to have you as her caregiver and advocate. It may be that her doctors could first try cutting the dosage of the water pill to see if she continues to not have the swelling. If she still does ok with that then maybe they could stop it. If she continues on the water pill be sure that she continues with her potassium pills. She can still make it. God Bless, ****

    Hi Wanda,

I want to agree with everyone about the water pill. Check with the doc first. Also, maybe small amounts of food all day will work with your mom? Is there anything that she thinks sounds good? So many things just don't sound good when you are sick like this. Whatever sounds good she should eat. HUGS and my thoughts are with you and your mom.
