Hi All,
I found this post under the Young Cancer Survivors forum from 8/18! That was a couple of days ago and that forum is very inactive!
Please help and reply to this post!!

The poster was "jeckalane" and this is what she had to say:

I have a friend who is the sweetest, nicest person that I know. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2000 when she was 19 and ever since her life has been a roller coaster. She has done really well for monthes at a time then gone back and found that it has spread. She has had her colon removed as well as most of her reproductive organs. She now has spots on her lungs. She needs to be doing chemo and radiation alternating because she is so tiny. She has now found treatment to be too much of a financial burden. She is now ineligible for her parents insurance and cannot find anyone willing to insure her due to her prexisting condition. She is such a fighter and I cant imagine her losing her fight to finances. Her church has had a spaghetti dinner for donations to her but that wont last long with the high costs of treatment. Are there any resources that anyone knows of, or financial assitance available out there that she may not be aware of?

Thanks guys!
Susan H.

I wonder if she can get on medicaid as an independent adult? Anyone? She should check with the social services division of the state in which she resides (I am assuming, of course, she lives in the states).

Susan I don't know in other states, but here in Miami Fl. there is an organization called Liga contra el Cancer, meaning League against Cancer that they provide all the best of cancer treatment for free, to people that don't have insurance or money, this is a very old organization created in Cuba before the Castro regimen, and they decide to do the same thing here in exile they do a yearly marathon and they get millions of dollars, is a very respectable organization, the only thing is that has to be in Miami but maybe there is something like this where this person lives. I really hope so, if you need anyway information about this organization just let me know. Betina

Have they called the American Cancer Society? They might be the most likely to know of organizations that can help. If she is disabled, she might also be eligible for Social Security Disability.I know St. Jude's accepts patients regardless of thier ability to pay, but not sure they would consider her.. bud
