I'm looking for help with managing problems associated with low re-section surgery. For instance what foods trigger frequent bouts of burning, abdominal pain and other symptoms. thanks in advance for any suggestions. I'm writing on behalf of my husband who is almost 6 monthes post-op and pretty discouraged with his lack of progress.

Please tell your husband to just hang in there a bit longer; it does get better. His body has just been through a huge shock and it will just take time to heal. I remember the frequent bouts of burning and abdominal pain after surgery and eating. Has he started chemo? I remember that caused a lot of the pain for the most part in the beginning. Also, keep away from spicy foods and stick to easier foods to digest and smaller, more frequent meals with small portions of lean proteins (fish is very good) and lots of fruits and veggies.

You should also try the recommended book, "Beating Cancer with Nutrition" by Dr. Patrick Quillin. His wife has compiled quite the recipe section and foods to help your body heal. Do a search for books on this site. There are plenty of great books for cancer patients.

I also know other's will respond with more information.

My chemo nurse also gave me this recipe for a breakfast shake. I use it to this day because it gives me all of my servings of fruits in the morning and makes it easier on my bowels. I'm nearly two years out.

    Note: requires a decent blender

    Mix

    1 Cup Water
    1 handful almonds
2 Tbsp Oatmeal (I use steel cut oats)
    2 Tbsp Flax Seed

    mix to make "milk"

    Add

    1 Apple
    1 Banana
    1 Slice Melon
Few frozen berries (I vary this one and use about 1 Cup Mixed frozen fruit or 1 Cup Frozen Strawberries

Good luck to you and your husband and please keep us informed on his (and your) progress.

Thanks for your reply Chynabear, it has been a rollercoaster since my husbands surgery and we have had little info on post-op problems. I have been reading the postings for a few weeks now and am overwhelmed by the strengh and courage shown by all of you.

Sadly, the same things that help, can hurt...I had my resection May 2005....and now, except when I live dangerously by eating 'naughty', I have complete control, and formed stool....
BUT if I drink an 8-oz glass of fruit juice....LOOK OUT!!!!
I drink ALOT of water....REAL water, nothing added. If I get too plugged, I usually can trace it to my lack of this magic fluid.

If I get too loose, I eat bananas, cheese....

I lost my rectum and sig colon....I agree with Tricia...tell him to hang a little longer...things got DRAMATICALLY better about this long after my surgery....

Of course, then (sigh) I was diagnosed with my breast cancer...chemo messed up EVERYTHING....
BUT I am NOW, as I said, all better!

    Hugs to you both.....
