Can anyone tell me what are the symptoms for breast cancer besides a lump or dimpling? My breast hurts, sometimes sort of burns around nipple. I will be having a mammogram/ultrasound and see breast surgeon next week and I am getting more scared every day. I have a rare cancer, no cure too and I don't think I can take any more. What do you do about fear and worry? Help!

Since my cancer was a lump with no pain, I don't know if the pain maybe a symptom. But you are doing the right think by getting the mammogram/ultrasound and seeing a surgeon next week. So now that you have that lined up. It is time to get busy and try to take your mind off the worry. I know that is so much easier said than done. But I found that working on projects (like spring cleaning) or going places with friends really helped me keep my sanity while I waited for results. Try to be good to yourself. God Bless.

The best advice is that you start taking your life minute by minute...and breathe! I take it by the "rare cancer" you mean that you already HAVE a cancer?
My saving was to find a counselor that was used to talking to cancer patients. She was GREAT! Ask your cancer treatment center, or doctor, or call ACS (1-800-ACS-2345) for a list of such people in your area. Stay calm, there are new treatments for cancer being found every day. Don't be frightened of the doctor visit, the earlier something is caught (if there IS something), the greater chance of controlling.
Watch a funny movie, take a bubble bath...sounds trivial, but most of what you are worrying about right now you can't control...so put it aside until you CAN control it!
Come here and vent, and in chat, too....all of us have had our crisises!

Susan and KathiM, Thanks for your help. I started big spring cleaning today and that will keep me busy for a long while, which I think will be good. I get tired easy due to all my other tumors so I will work and then rest, work some more. This might actually be very good for me at the moment because I will be too busy to think about anything else, maybe there won't be any time left for fear and being nervous.
    Thanks,
    Tere

This cancer business sure keeps a person mind over active. And to top it off, you have to work within other people's time schedule to learn your fate. This board has been very so helpful to me during the waiting period. I start dose dense AC chemo on Tuesday and it feels like it took me a lifetime to reach this point. I too have kept busy by cleaning and preparing meals for the freezer etc. It sounds like you already know the drill. Do simple pleasures for yourself, try not to leave your mind on it's own for too long ( I know easy to say). My thoughts will be with you and stay strong. Also, watching comedy seems to help keep me distracted. There are some pretty funny people on this site that you can gain some strength from.

  • My first breast lump was sore to the touch....I thought my one-year-old had elbowed me there. My second one was just a lumpy-feeling with no pain. They were both cancer. I don't think there is any standard for symptoms of breast cancer. You have done all you could by getting it checked out right away.
I fully understand your worry and fear. Prayer is my best defence and also talking to others at places such as this.
    God bless.

I want to thank you all for your help and suggestions. I was busy cleaning all weekend (at one point my husband decided to help mop floors) and didn't have time to think about anything else so I am a lot more relaxed. No nightmares either as I was very tired when I went to bed. I see breast surgeon tomorrow plus mammograms. I think I can face that now. I will do my best not to think while I wait for results. THANKS guys!
