Hello Dear Family,
It's Mary from WI again writing to say "hi" and that I hope you all are having a safe, restful, and wonderful weekend, too! ;)

And this maybe for just the "women" in the group but... I talked with my mom today and the last time she was at the doctor they took a urine sample and there was blood in it. So, they are doing some tests and said they will probably prescribe her an antibiotic.

- Has anyone out there ever experienced this?
- Does the chemo effect her menapause at all?

I'm just worried because I let my mind wonder like "has the cancer spread to her ovaries" or something like that? And I know I should think and stay positive; about blood in her urine seems like a pretty serious thing to me so...

If there is anyone out there that can help me out with this scare I would very much appreciate it.

    Dear Mary,
    I have had blood in my urine and it was due to a kidney infection, that had nothing to do with my cancer. It was bad, (The infections)I ended up with just blood, it seemed and no urine and hospitalization. But after super antibiotics and some other changes, my kidneys are now fine. It took a while, I was "prone" to infections for a while, but it doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. If they only found trace amounts of blood, probably "cipro" will be prescribed and she'll be dandy afer a while. (But I was NOT going through chemo, when I went through this) so it may not be the same at all.

    As for chemo and menapause. I was on Tamoxifen, which is not traditional for colon cancer, but . . . anyway, it put me in menopause. It was terrible. (I was only 37 then) I was supposed to take it for 5 years. I couldn't tolerate it, so I don't take it anymore. The menopausal symptons are gone. I don't know if this helps. Just what happened with me.

    I can't help you with blood in urine.

    But, does chemo affect menopause? Well, I was clearly in menopause and my hot flashes were tolerable but still present when I was diagnosed. Throughout my entire chemo cycle I had NO hot flashes / night sweats. But, now that I have been off chemo 5 months the flashes are coming back - mostly night sweats and fairly tolerable. But I joke that I've discovered a cure for hot flashes - too bad the cure (chemo) is way worse than the condition it seems to cure!

    I had blood in the urine pre-cancer. Turned out to be a bladder infection that didn't have any pain. Had to take pills that made my urine BRIGHT red, but it did the trick.
    I just did a post in the breast cancer board about canceritis. On the surface, it seems that we survivors (whether in treatment or post) are paranoid. I like to say we are just VERY AWARE of our bodies. Sounds like it's being checked out.

    I am not a doctor but my understanding is that (a) any time you have blood in the urine, it is a good idea to get it checked out (which you are doing) and (b) often, it is due to a urinary tract infection. Hope all works out OK. Thinking of you both.

    I read that blood in urine could be a side effect of chemotherapy.
