Tamoxifen/uterine ultrasound

Quick question for those in the know:

I recently saw an new GYN doctor who told me that a yearly uterine ultrasound is no longer advised for women on Tamoxifen!

My old GYN said to me before we moved "Promise me you will have a yearly ultrasound no matter what". New GYN is saying that unless the patient is symptomatic, an ultrasound isn't indicated. She said that there were too many false positives which led to painful, unneeded endometrial biopsies.

Any thoughts on this or has anyone else heard of this?

Thanks,
Karen

Ha! I'm replying to my own message! I wanted to also ask if anyone else has experienced joint pain from tamoxifen? Mostly in my hips and lower back. Also, just a general stiffness in my hips and back....making me feel like an old fart! I had a bone scan which was normal (whew) so I'm thinking it must be the tamoxifen.

    Again, thanks!

Hi Karen! I was on Tamoxifen for 5 years and had a uterine ultrasound every 6 mos. It does show changes in the uterous which the MD monitered. I must say I feel better being watched closely. I did have some foot cramping while on Tamoxifen but nothing else. I've been on Femara for 6 mos. and most of my joints hurt! Can't find anything over the counter to help the discomfort. I'm on the verge of stopping and trying Aromisen. Hope this helps you. Good luck. Feel better! HUGS!! Cathy

I haven't had the ultrasound, but I do believe that it is no longer done. I did, however, have an endrometrial biopsy after an abnormal pap and can confirm that is one of the most painful procedures we can endure. It was so painful I vomited and fainted.

I found the article that I read on this. Finally - sorry it took so long, but I do hope it will put your mind at rest:

I've been on tamoxifen for 6 months now. Underwent surgery and rad. for DCIS. My back and hip (right usually) hurt terribly now. I was so achy last night that I cried. And in the mornings my back hurts so badly that I can't stay leaned over the sink to rinse my face. I did have back trouble and hip pain before my diagnosis but it seems more intense now. If anyone knows of anything to help relieve stiffness and pain it's much appreciated.

I'm also scheduled to have a uterine ultrasound in May.

Any new info would be great!
