My father has advanced prostate cancer with a PSA of 160 with cancer spreading throughout his bones. He is currently on a lot of pain medication and weakening rapidly. His new urologist is recommending orchiectomy even though my father has been getting Lupron injections for 18 months. I asked my father's oncologist and he seemed to think that Lupron does as a good job as possible in shutting down production of testosterone in the body. If so, why is the urologist recommending orchiectomy? Any one else have any thoughts or experience? |

Re: Orchiectomy vs. Hormonal Therapy
Orchiectomy is supposed to be equally effective however supposedly having the advantage of not having to go for shots every 3-4 months since it's a 1 time event. HOWEVER, if your father is tolerating the shots well & is not financially constrained (medicare pays for the shots)I'd say stick with the Lupron. My personal experience indicates it works for me & I've heard many positive results as well!

Re: Orchiectomy vs. Hormonal Therapy
Thanks Benji. After discussing it with several other doctors and researching it on the internet, my father has chosen to continue his Lupron shots.
